I have wanted to do the Mille Miglia Road Race in Italy for a number of years now. As I approach the age where I may just have enough free time to prepare a car, I decided somewhat optimistically to investigate the entry criteria. First off, you need an eligible car. A model that participated in the race between 1927-1957. This usually means a £50k+ car. To be considered for entry, the rarer the better makes it much easier. Basic entry fee amounts to Euro 12,500 plus 22% VAT (total Euro 15,250.00). But before that, you need: vehicle registration 900.00 Euro + VAT for the Participant category and 500.00 Euro + VAT for the Eligible category. Then : owners will pay a yearly membership fee for each car of 200.00 Euro + VAT for the first car owned, 50.00 Euro + VAT for the following, which will allow them to be part of the exclusive Registro 1000 Miglia Community. So add in getting the car there, hotels, food and the inevitable look around Venice as a side trip, you are looking at £20k to join in. Then its by invite only. The organisers will hymn and haw over whether they actually need to allow another Lancia Aurelia B20 to start or should they make room for a rarer Siata 208 CS. You could wait years. I could register and apply now, but be dead by the time I’m accepted. Unless your car is super special, then you are straight in……prestige and kudos for the organisers you see? Christ!….. makes you want to give up before you start ! In this world where want and need are so prevalent, is there a place for such elitism? Morally better ways to spend £20k of course. I have recently translated and proofread this article about the 1954 German Grand Prix. Unfortunately, during practices Onofre Marimón had a fatal accident and it was González to spread the terrible news. Maserati withdrew as a sign of mourning. The race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel of a Mercedes, followed by Mike Hawthorn who was called to replace González as the latter, after the accident of Marimón, had lost any interest in the race. This was the second success for the German manufacturer, which had prepared a new car model specially designed for these type of tracks. How Anger and Revenge Gave Birth to Ferrari And Lamborghini? Let's delve into the origin stories behind Top Sports Car Brands in the world. Italy is renowned as the primary manufacturer of sports cars, with 7 out of 8 supercar brands originating from this country. It all began in 1910 with the inception of Alfa Romeo, the first supercar company. In an era when cars were a luxury only the wealthy could afford, brands needed to prove their quality and comfort. To build trust, they participated in various races. Alfa Romeo launched their first car, the Torpedo, in the 1920s and won their first race with it. Interestingly, Enzo Ferrari was part of the Alfa Romeo racing team and won many races for them. However, in 1929, Enzo left Alfa Romeo to start his racing team. Without sufficient funds, he collaborated with George Remini, who eventually acquired 80% of Ferrari's shares. In 1939, Alfa Romeo dismissed Enzo Ferrari. Undeterred, Enzo launched his first car, the 125S, under Auto Avio Construzioni in 1947. Over the next two decades, Ferrari sold numerous cars, but their high prices meant they were owned only by millionaires and billionaires. One such owner was Ferruccio Lamborghini, who owned multiple Ferraris but had complaints about them. When he shared his feedback with Enzo Ferrari, Enzo famously retorted, "Go back to your tractors." Taking this personally, Lamborghini decided to start his own supercar company. In 1963, Lamborghini launched their first car, the 350 GTV. In 1971, they introduced the iconic Countach, led by Horacio Pagani. Due to disagreements, Pagani left Lamborghini and founded his own company. In 1992, he launched the Pagani Zonda under Pagani Automobiles. This car was so unique that it attracted investments from major brands, including Ferrari. Only 450 Pagani cars have been sold worldwide, with some models costing up to $18.6 million. This is how anger and revenge forged some of the world's finest supercar brands. Testdriving a Porsche Taycan Gran Tourismo this Wedesday thanks to Porsche Center Berlin Adlershof close to Schönefeld Airport on A13 South of Berlin with max. 230 kph due to traffic (A10 was completely blocked due to road works): (1) first select Sport Plus in the mode ring on steering wheel: only mode with great Formula E sound - a joy no Tesla can offer, (2) battery indication is confusion: starts with 60%, goes to 80% and with selecting target Teupitz off the A13 is 100% (3) if you reward yourself with a Porsche for your 50th birthday or so: the Porsch Taycan is well accepted tax-subsidized company car being an EV and (4) Gran Tourismo means grand tour, so swappable battery modules would be prefect to swapp batteries in less than 1 minute on long autobahn journeys 😉
