This may be controversial…but it shouldn’t be. TechSlice, LLC had 12 holidays off, some paid community volunteer time, and a discretioanry company week shutdown to ‘reset’ on top of regular employee PTO last year. I’ve been told it’s a LOT of time for a startup. (Only in the US) Most of our work is deliverable/results based. This year, I added another week of employee PTO based off of feedback from the team. I’ve been criticized for the holidays we celebrate and have been told what I ‘should do’… I love feedback but, telling others what to do without taking the time to understand the ‘why’ behind people’s decisions comes off as patronizing. You think you’re the only one telling me how to run my company? You’re not. It’s also not your company and not my first rodeo. We’re not your average company. We never will be. We are a team of creatives and we work on crazy stuff. When were ‘on’ - we’re ‘on’. We perform. When we’re off, we’re off. That needs to be respected. There are benefits to creatives (and everyone) to have that space and time to ‘be bored’, to THINK, to create outside of ‘tasking’. Or just to be with others. Outside of that, when daycare is closed - we’re closed! When daycare and other institutions are closed, how to you expect parents and caretakers in general to be productive? Some family structures have support during those times and others don’t. That extra support isn’t guaranteed. I’m a big believer in family first. Take care of what you need to. Family time is family time and work time is work time. I’m a single mom running a company. I do my best to juggle and sometimes those worlds blend. I can’t do it all at once. Why would I expect my team to? Get real. Does that make me less effective? I’d argue it makes me hyper effective when I’m actually at work. My perspective and experience running two software agencies, a hybrid venture studio, and growing my company throughout COVID (with a young child) - has shown me the importance of a culture that respects time off and closing when childcare and various elder care institutions are closed. You may or may not get that but, you don’t have to. My team does. How we spend our time is our decision. Not yours. Period.

I joined Statsig later than I hoped, but I still saw its three-year journey. 2020 was important for me. I became a better data scientist -- effective, pragmatic, and ironically, "are right, a lot" -- one of Amazon's leadership principles that I found most puzzling.  A big reason was building the conviction of the value of data through AB testing. After 6 years in PhD and 2 years at Amazon, I doubted if data really helped businesses. At Facebook, I learned it does. I used data to make key decisions and prove them with experiments. Such conviction is still paying dividends today. Facebook's AB testing tool was great, but I couldn't talk about it much. It was internal. When Vijaye R. started a company to make a similar tool, I interviewed him (https://lnkd.in/gGRqTjRg) and asked for a demo (https://lnkd.in/gnA_cjpy). Rewatching it today, you will find that the product has matured a LOT, but the technical insights and the mission remain the same. I believed in this business a lot, maybe more than most of the founding members. This tool needs to be built, and they're the right people for it. I wished them luck and continued my journey. Two years later, with all the learning and growth, I was back. It almost felt like gravity. Because Statsig is about the mission all along -- make data useful.

Delving deeper into Quadra’s Co-pilot Success Framework Services Offering, the core of it that struck me most, is that Quadra’s team, strive to answer “what success looks like for customers” when they adapt co-pilot. The 3 tenets are (1) Readiness (2) Adoption and Usage and (3) Impact. The Readiness phase explores which personas should deploy co-pilot. Adoption and Usage phase explores if co-pilot is being adopted and used and Impact phase will land the value that co-pilot is delivering and how it has made a difference to the organization. Today I’m celebrating 1 year of being WOAW’s CEO 🎉 Taking on this opportunity actually changed my life in a massive way. Looking back over the last 12 months, it’s surreal to think how much we’ve achieved. Some of it is the more generic - satisfying, yes - but generic stuff. • More than doubled revenue • Produced better work for clients than ever before • Offered new services But beyond the surface, there’s been so much more. • Formulated an exciting plan for the future, which we’re all aligned on • Cultivated a group environment which encourages creativity and happiness • Changed our structure and processes to make us stronger and more efficient • Experienced massive highs and some really difficult challenges • Expanded our network - our friends of WOAW - which boasts some of the brightest minds and  most talented people imaginable • Internally, we’ve challenged each other and held one another accountable • I’ve developed as person in ways I’m really proud of • Had a fucking good time In some ways it feels crazy it’s only been one year. In others it feels like a lifetime of work has gone into it. Here’s to the next year and all we’re aiming to achieve. Who’s in for the ride? 🙋♂️
