Friday afternoon thoughts: Don’t be the “Bad news BUL”! Where I work we have a role titled “Business Unit Leader”, aka BUL. I have seen many different types of personalities fill this role over the years, some were decent, some were excellent, one was outstanding, and a handful were “Bad news BULs”. The good ones were engaged with the shop floor workers, knew our names, asked about our lives. The excellent one knew our anniversary dates and congratulated us personally. The “Bad news BULs” you only see when things are going wrong. If a machine is beyond repair, if someone gets hurt, if the line is down, etc… We(the work force) begin to associate this person with bad news, and when we see them we know it’s not a good reason. We are not happy to see them. This lowers morale, it disengages us from leadership, and makes us feel like the only way to get our leader’s attention is to “misbehave”. I beg of you, if you ever find yourself in a position of leadership, show up for celebrations, be there for recognitions, support the team when things are looking down, but don’t just be a “Bad news BUL”.
