At a recent Branding conference, the discussion on 'Deconstructing Gender in Products & Marketing' sparked a firestorm of thought. Unanimously, all marketers agreed: it's time to put an end to gender stereotyping in our campaigns. Look at Harley-Davidson Motor Company's print ad, for instance. Traditionally associated with rugged masculinity, they broke the mold by showcasing a woman riding their iconic bike. And not for glamour, mind you (a trend I'm not fond of). Well done, team Harley. Let's ask the real questions: 👩🍳 Why are cooking oil ads confined to women in the kitchen? 🚗 Why do car and bike ads predominantly feature men? 👩👧👦 Why do kids' products tug heartstrings with mothers? 🧼 Why are washing powder and soap ads fixated on women? 💻 Aren't tech products for everyone? Women are tech-savvy too! In today's world, boundaries of responsibilities are blurring. Both genders actively participate in every facet of life. Commercials and advertisements wield tremendous power in reshaping societal norms. As marketers, we have a pivotal role to play. Let's champion equality in every frame, every caption, and every campaign. As we celebrate International Women's Day today, I'm taken back to a moment from 2017, captured in this photo. I reflect on how quickly seven years have passed. At that time, my children were navigating their early teens, aged 11 and 13, and I was balancing of the demands of being a working mum and an executive role. The mornings were a rush of activity, from preparing lunches and organizing sports bags to getting everyone out the door for work and school. One particular memory stands out — after the usual morning whirlwind, I arrived at the office and dived into work. It wasn't until 11 am that I looked down and realized I was wearing mismatched shoes. In the chaos of the morning, I had been interrupted while choosing my shoes and, without giving it a second thought, I had rushed out, not considering my footwear again. On this International Women's Day, I want to acknowledge working mums and every woman juggling multiple roles. Today, we note the contributions women make. While we acknowledge the journey towards equality is still a work in progress, it's crucial to recognize our collective role in shaping a future that is diverse, inclusive, and empowering for the next generation of women. This International Women’s Day, RISE celebrated its first anniversary by announcing the expansion of its membership to accelerate gender equality. RISE supports its mission to empower women workers in global garment supply chains through three core strategies: (1) strengthening knowledge and skills for factory workers and managers; (2) transforming business practices to include gender equality, and (3) influencing public policy and other key actors. Two out of three fashion manufacturing company HR executives in Italy say inequalities in wages exist that put women at an disadvantage, and half of the executives working in the diversity, equity and inclusion domain agree, a survey found. Most gender pay gap is perceived for higher-level positions. Today, on #InternationalWomensDay, we’re spotlighting our research on the gender-based violence and harassment that takes place in garment factories in Türkiye. Gender inequality and gender-based violence and harassment are significant issues in Türkiye’s garment sector - reflective of the garment industry as a whole. Women #garmentworkers tend to be employed in positions that are underpaid, lower status, temporary, precarious and considered unskilled. Moreover, with only 8% of women workers unionised, there are few avenues for them to push for change. The few studies on gender-based violence and harassment show that it is still a prevalent yet clandestine issue, with there being no official data available in the country. That’s why in 2022, Fair Wear carried out a research project to identify the root causes of #humanrights risks related to #livingwages and #genderequality, with a focus on violence and harassment in garment factories. The research was done in partnership with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), Dr Çağla Ünlütürk, Dr Serkan Önge and Dr Jane Pillinger; and three Fair Wear member brands. The research findings provide detailed evidence of long working hours, low wages, deep poverty, gender inequality and the existence of violence and harassment in the workplace. Gender equity is a key component to realising Fair Wear's mission to the garment sector becoming a source of safe, dignified and decent paid employment. That's why we guide our member brands with their human rights due diligence, ensuring that each step is fully gender-responsive. What will it take to close the #GenderExerciseGap? Recently, I've been thinking about women's experience in sport, or it's lack thereof. Having come across two pieces of research that deepened my understanding of women in sport, this week's Unconforming shares how we need to shift sport and exercise systems to allow women to integrate more movement in their lives. Here's what I was reading (links in comments): 1. Closing the #GenderExerciseGap Report created by ASICS Corporation 2. Who's Bodies Get Studied by #CultureStudy where Anne Helen Petersen interviews author Christine Yu on the "consequences of focusing so much bio-medical research on cis-gender men." What I learned is so closely connected to the insights I've uncovered creating the tools for #WomenCentricDesign: ⏰ Time poverty is the biggest barrier to exercise that women experience. In my research, I find that it's not just the lack of time women, but also the variability of when they have time, which matters so much for something like exercise which requires consistency for habit building. 🏋🏽♂️ Men's perceptions of women not exercising "due to body insecurities" are way higher than reality. This matters because individuals behind creating sport equipment, outlining benchmarks and standards in sport, and perpetuating gendered stereotypes are primarily cis-gendered men – and unless their perceptions shift, they will continue design the sport ecosystem to exclude women. 💰🦺 Cost and safety are two major barriers to exercise. These are amazing themes to consider because they bring a systemic lens to the core issue of the gender gap in sport & exercise: such as creating space for urban architecture, the gender pay and wealth gap, mobility and more. #InspireInclusion is the theme for International Women's Day 2024. Women are and always have been the core backbone of our family, society and workplace. While men are dominating in certain sectors, over the years, we are seeing more and more women taking on the jobs that men used to do and proficient at. Inclusion at workplace means more empathy, a different perspective and a more innovative way of business planning. Fashion companies like Gucci bags or even Prada for example, have always been targeting women as their core customers. Imagine if only men held the senior positions in the company, the colors and decision making would have been so bland? Nevertheless, at workplace, we should aim for at least 30% women in every single department. Today, as we celebrate International Women's Day, let's take a moment to also acknowledge the women in our lives. Our mother, wife, sister, colleagues and your girlfriend. They're the ones who stood by your side, providing you shelter, encouragement and motivation to carry on during your darkest period. They deserve a pampered day like today to make them feel special.
