Stop waiting and start building. Here are some tips: 1. Focus on the smallest possible action. Don't overthink grand plans – just do one thing today to move yourself closer to your goal. 2. Showcase instead of asking. Instead of waiting for permission, create a small sample of what you can do (a blog post, a design, a volunteer project) and let it speak for itself. 3. Embrace "sideways" opportunities. The path may not look like you expect. Be open to possibilities that are adjacent to your dream – they might lead you there in unexpected ways.

Building connections in the construction world isn't just about business; it's about sharing stories and experiences. Here are some tips for building meaningful connections in the community:   Grab a Coffee, Not Just a Name Tag: Industry events are great for networking, but the real magic happens when you grab a coffee with someone afterward. Take the time to chat, understand their journey, and share a bit of yours. LinkedIn beyond Job Searches: While LinkedIn is often seen as a job-seeking platform, it also serves a broader purpose. It's a space to connect, exchange insights, and support one another. Local Heroes Unite: Whether it's a community cleanup or a local construction event, get involved! Supporting your local scene feels good and introduces you to people who share your passion. Use Social Media Wisely: Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok are valuable tools for showcasing your work and engaging with others. Wherever you feel comfortable, share your work, engage in conversations, and let your personality shine through. Ask for Stories, Not Just Advice: When connecting, don't just ask for advice; ask for stories. Everyone's got a tale to tell, and these stories often lead to genuine connections and shared experiences. Encourage Collaboration: Connect with a purpose. If you see someone doing excellent work, give them a virtual high-five! Acknowledge their achievements and start a conversation about potential collaboration. Casual Catch-ups Over Workshops:  While workshops and training sessions are beneficial, the most lasting connections are often formed in more informal settings (see Grab a Coffee above!). Stay Human, Follow Up: After connecting, be human. Drop a follow-up message, share a funny meme, or just check in. Building a network is about staying connected on a human level. Be picky! I've learned it's not about how many projects you can take on, but the #quality of those projects. Choosing wisely is key. In design, every project is a chance to create something special, something that stands the test of time and genuinely improves people's lives. It's not just about filling your schedule and your pocket with any project, but about picking those that allow you to be creative and achieve outstanding results. The same goes for business. I'd rather have a few very happy clients and solid business relationships than constantly chase new opportunities without really committing to any. The quality of relationships and projects always beats quantity. Steve Jobs said, "A home run is much better than two doubles." Next time you're facing a decision about projects or business, remember quality is key. Focus your energy on what really matters. I used to think that all connections had to be big, you know, the kind that makes your network shine. But let me tell you about a moment that completely changed my mind. About 2 weeks ago, someone reached out to me to collect a chair they'd bought from me. It was a simple transaction, nothing out of the ordinary. But as we got to talking while loading up the chair, we found ourselves discussing everything from our shared interest in graphic design to my web design work. Now here's where the magic happens. That small connection I made? It led me to a bigger connection that has steered me in a direction I never expected. Turns out, the person I met happened to be acquainted with a major player in the industry - the exact type of connection I was interested in in the first place. Thanks to that initial conversation, I was introduced to this industry heavyweight, and the rest, as they say, is history. That connection has opened doors I never knew existed, leading to great opportunities I have become exposed to. The takeaway? Never underestimate the power of small connections, my friends. They have a way of leading to bigger and better things, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. (there were some seriously surprising responses) some didn’t really understand the purpose of LinkedIn - which I think is fair because it’s always been seen as the lone wolf of social media… others felt a sense of anxiety to know what to post, how to post and a general sense of unspoken competitiveness which is troubling! When you are not getting clients or projects... Here's what I have done so far when I was available, but there was no demand for the kind of work I do: Focus on your dream project, which you wanted to do for a client but didn't have enough creative freedom. Yes, it happens, and it is completely normal. So now, you can utilize this time and work on something for yourself. Put your heart/mind into it. Personal projects will always allow you to explore another side of your own skill set. This will also help you in sharpening your skills. 😇 We all aspire to work with top companies and create amazing projects, but what most people fail to realize is that to produce innovative work, you have to go through the quantity first. Not just for the sake of quantity, but for the sake of time optimization. The more you practice something, the better you become with it. Most clients who pay more are often on tight timelines. So, when the opportunity arises, you have to be prepared for it. And to do this, you have to be both fast and proficient at what you do. In short, create something that reflects "YOU" whenever you're free to do so. This is exactly why I engage in personal explorations from time to time: to see if I can improve my skill set, especially in terms of lighting and composition. Another thing you can do is curate your portfolio and reach out to people who inspire you and whom you want to work with, but that's a topic for another post.
