Producer 101: When Is It Truly "Done"? A few tips on nudging. As a producer, one of our most unique roles is being the gatekeeper of when a project is declared "done." This decision isn't always easy, but it's essential to guide your production to completion, whether it's a commercial or a full-length film. In advertising, it's all about delivering the message the client paid for, and it must be executed to perfection. There's a fine line between fine-tuning and never-ending tweaks. You can edit, remix, or change elements, but at some point, you must call it "done." Your responsibility is to provide creatives with the support and space they need to create brilliance, but they, too, must complete their work, because that's how we all get paid. In the world of filmmaking, the concept of "done" takes on a different form. Here, a producer must be deeply involved in the creative process, guiding decisions and keeping everything moving forward. Perfection can become the enemy, and sometimes, good or very good is enough. This balancing act is where the magic happens. It's about creating enough room for creative excellence while staying on course, on budget, and on schedule. Think of it more like a cattle rancher guiding the herd home rather than the commonly used phrase, "herding cats." The truth is, great creatives will (always) deliver; you just need to nudge them in the right direction when needed. And that, my fellow producers, is where the real art of producing shines. “What even is a Producer??” The number of times I get this question is astounding, especially when it’s asked by people in the entertainment industry. In conversation, I try to explain using examples from daily life, but often my audience gets lost. Frankly, the answer isn’t all that simple. I’ve found that for every project, every studio, and every producer themselves have a different definition of what the role of “Producer” looks like. For some projects, the clearly defined ‘Line Producer’ is the person who “handles the money,” while in other spaces, like my most recent contract at King Studio, I found this title to be a little more flexible. As a ‘Creative Producer’ at King Studio, I wrote, pitched, developed, ideated, budgeted, hired, planned, managed, coordinated, directed, and wrapped projects. This workload isn’t universal to a Producer’s role; at a smaller studio, the title of ‘Producer’ can be pretty broad. Generally, Producers are go-getters and, at times, jack-of-all-trades. Sounds stressful? It can be, but Producers find joy and order in that chaos. Ideally, the Producer is the engine for the ship that is the project. Sure, you have the captain (director) and the crew, but having a Producer do a lot of the grueling (and maybe heavy?) lifting down below is essential to its success. If you are a Creative, especially one who is struggling to finish projects alone, you need to hire a Producer. Even if this person isn’t skilled in the task at hand, they will hire, resource, or simply grind their way into getting that task done. So next time someone asks you what a Producer is, feel free to try and explain. Red Flags to Fix: A Producer's Guide to Pre-Production Script Revision A successful film starts with a solid script. Pre-production script revisions are vital, and as a producer, you play a key role in identifying issues and guiding improvements. Here are red flags to watch for: 1. Pacing Problems Does the story drag, or move so fast it's confusing? Uneven pacing kills audience engagement. Look for scenes that need to be tightened, expanded, or potentially cut. Are the act breaks placed effectively for maximum impact? 2. Unclear Character Motivations Do the characters' actions and choices make sense? Are their goals and conflicts well-defined? Thinly drawn characters undermine any plot, no matter how thrilling. 3. Excessive Dialogue or Exposition Is the dialogue natural, or stilted with characters speechifying? "On-the-nose" dialogue dumps information clumsily. Film is a visual medium – can information be shown instead of told? 4. Plot Holes and Logic Lapses Are there inconsistencies or moments where the audience may say, "That wouldn't happen!"? Do character actions align with their established personalities? Pay close attention to the ending – does it deliver a satisfying payoff? 5. Budget Buster Potential Are there locations or action sequences far beyond your realistic means? Can scenes be reworked for feasibility without sacrificing the core story? Early collaboration with your production team is crucial for catching these. How to Approach Revisions Specificity is Key: Don't just say, "this scene is boring." Explain why and offer potential solutions. Collaborate with the Writer: Avoid imposing changes. Work together to explore better ways to achieve the script's goals. Seek Outside Feedback: Fresh eyes from industry professionals can spot issues you've become blind to. Remember: Pre-production is the time to fix problems, not shoot around them. After a misguided start, I'm finally able to grasp the macro/micro aspect of film production which changed my entire outlook on project planning. 1️⃣Proper communication with relevant HODs and director is key to ensuring smooth shoot days and post production. 2️⃣ Start with an established framework which synergizes technical planning and logistics management. 3️⃣ With detailed targets and desired outcome, everyone will be able to perform optimally to reduce resource and time wastage.
