Journalism’s Post

In my last post, I told the story of how one of the professors evaluating my final paper at the University of Brasília referred to it as the best project he had evaluated up until then. Today I will reveal what my paper was about and how the circumstances analyzed in it may well represent the beginning of a communication revolution that has been taking place ever since. In 2009, the biggest petroleum company in Brazil, Petrobras, was about to become the central character of a Parliament Investigation Commission. At that time, the most influential newspapers and other news outlets were covering the possible signs of corruption in the company. In order to manage that image and communication crisis, Petrobras started a blog called "Facts and Data." The idea of the blog by itself could be seen as revolutionary, as it aimed to check any possible misleading information circulating in the media about the company at a time when fact checking was not a common thing on the Internet yet. But that was not the focus of my paper. What the blog did that became, in my opinion, the most important move in the "history" of journalism up until that time is that it published all the questions reporters sent to the company with the respective answers given to them, and the blog did that before the journalists wrote their news reports. Why would that be such an astonishing thing? It caused the three most important newspapers in the country to write negative reports about the blog and its practices for many days in a row. National organizations related to journalism were asked to express an opinion. The most influential TV news program ("Jornal Nacional") took the time to read an editorial note on the matter, condemning the company's attitude. A Journalist Story Introduction Being a journalist is not quite easy. There is a story behind the story. It requires one to be time conscious, informed and ready to take risks. 1.Time Conscious. A good journalist respects time. Currently, in the global village, news happens frequently and is received instantly on mobile phones, tablets and computers. Journalists are obliged to strike a balance between being fast and accurate when reporting news. This ensures delivery of irrefutable information hence remaining reliable and trustworthy to the audience. 2.Informed. A good journalist should be aware of the most current and odd events of the day. What are the odd events of the day? The answer is quite simple, a dog biting a man is not news but a man biting a dog is news. 3.Taking Risks. 'Yesterday's headlines may not make today's front page but they could serve as a preview of future stories.' Journalists should normalize taking risks by emphasizing the value of past events in shaping future headlines. Even if these past events may not seem immediately relevant, they could lead to groundbreaking stories in the future!

Have you noticed an uptick in factual errors in media coverage? It's become a troubling trend that too often, reporting is marred by careless mistakes—like incorrect company names, wrong executive titles, or even misstated ownership details. I’d argue that this is a symptom of the proliferation of sites claiming to be traditional media, yet failing to abide by traditional journalistic ethics. This shift is concerning and prompts us to question the integrity and accountability of such outlets. While these errors don't represent all media professionals—many of whom diligently correct inaccuracies as they arise—it raises concerns about the overall rigor of fact-checking within the industry. The commitment to accuracy is fundamental, yet it seems that the volume of unaddressed correction requests is growing, pointing to a worrisome oversight in media responsibility and what can truly be deemed journalism. This was posted on one of my Facebook groups. It really speaks volumes to me because I left the journalism field for a career in real estate. Make of this what you will.... ____________ Journalists have written a lot about real estate agents lately. They’ve called agents “dysfunctional” and even question whether or not they are a “cartel”. It made me start to think. I wondered what the American people actually thought about real estate agents. And, for that matter, what they thought about journalists. Well, it seems Gallup does a survey on just this subject. In their latest “Honesty/Ethics in Professions” survey, they found that almost 8 out of 10 (79%) of Americans rate real estate agents average to very high when it comes to honesty and ethics while less than 2 out of 10 (19%) found them to be low or very low (2% had no opinion). Journalists? Less than 6 out of 10 (58%) found them average to very high when it comes to honesty and ethics while more than 4 out of 10 (42%) found them to be low or very low (1% had no opinion). Restating the above, more than TWICE THE NUMBER of Americans found journalists less honest than they did real estate agents. Perhaps, journalists should spend more time scrutinizing their own profession and less time on other professions. - Steve Harney

I'll never forget how a journalist laughed at our CEO when we explained that his best friend, a VP at the company, had died the previous weekend in a rock climbing accident. Maybe it was a nervous laugh. But if it was an awkward laugh, it wasn't followed up by any condolences, or an acknowledgment of our CEO's pain. Journalists have a tough job to do, but they're human. Some people get into the news business for their own reasons. Tech reporters in particular can be king-makers, being the first to share new products and software with the public. And this goes to people's heads. Experienced publicists know who these reporters are, and how their clients should handle them in interview situations. Never forget that exciting as it is to earn media mentions, and share you story with the public, remember that it's not the reporter's job to make you look good, or to tell your story the way you want it to be told. In fact, a journalist may laugh at you on one of the worst days of your life. And you still have to make the most of the opportunity. When engaging with media, always be prepared for any outcome. Practice, be light on your feet, and never forget that your dealing with a human.

Journalist Fellow Jussi Latvala sought to answer these questions and more in this insightful project. 👍 Despite the lack of evidence behind transparency as a driver of trust, Jussi says there may be an argument for transparency based on moral obligation, just as "journalists demand [it] from other actors in society". Don't forget to attribute sources! In journalism, trust is everything. Readers rely on us to deliver accurate and unbiased information. 📌 By attributing information to its source, we show transparency and allow readers to individually evaluate information to form an opinion. Here's how it works: ▶️Direct Attribution: Mention the source by name and title. "Dr. Sarah Jones, a climate professor at Columbia University, said..." ▶️Indirect Attribution: Use descriptive phrases to indicate the source. "A recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found..." ▶️Unnamed Sources: Use with caution and only when necessary. Remember that you'll likely have to verify your unnamed source with your editor(s) "Sources close to the investigation revealed..." Strong attribution doesn't only offer trust, it provides context.
