 I was surprised by two aspects of this article on providing learners with tools for reflecting on their progress after a course is over 👀 Of course, we all know that learning shouldn't end once a workshop or course is over - this goes for schoolkids, students, and faculty attending faculty development workshops. 💪 We all need to keep learning, all the time. But how can we do this? People are busy and there's so much to keep track of. Now, I'm a big fan of learning journals and/or knowledge management systems for saving notes (I use RemNote), even cultivating a lifelong practice of studying with flashcards (also: RemNote). ❗ Surprise #1: This piece suggests more of a checklist/self-survey tool. The idea is that you first define key practices - things you learned that you should be applying to your daily life. Then you answer the following questions: 👉 How much do I know about this practice? 👉 Would I like to support this practice? 👉 Do I use this practice? 👉 And there's a field for notes as well. I love these questions - they really bring focus to the fact that knowledge is not belief and belief is not application. I can know about a practice without wanting to support it, while simultaneously having to apply it because my institution made it mandatory. ❗ Surprise #2: Focusing on practices. I also love that this tool doesn't look at topics or knowledge - it's very action-oriented. This seems especially useful for faculty, so I'm thinking of integrating it into my faculty development workshops. 🤔 What do you think? Could this be useful for your students? Becoming smarter than a thermostat requires moving from a single-loop to a double-loop reflection model.  But, is this an effortless process? Likely not. The double loop involves questioning taken-for-granted norms and often leading to new choices. This process can be uncomfortable, especially at first, and so is often not pursued. Yet, this is the power of reflective practice: the ability to ask difficult questions. Only then does the person or organisation have the chance to learn how to learn. I encountered this metaphor in the book Schools That Learn by Peter Senge, which I first came across at the Warwick University Library during my teacher training summer program. Learning by doing. We say that phrase all of the time but what does it really mean? Do you really learn best when you are part of the learning process rather than watching a video or listening to a lecture or reading an instruction manual. YES. The answer is a resounding yes. Many experts agree on this but I've seen it first hand, in a purely anecdotal way. John Dewey (born October 20, 1859, Burlington, Vermont, U.S.—died June 1, 1952, New York, New York) was considered the Father of Educational Philosophy. His 4 Principles: 🌱Learning by doing or experiential learning. 🌱Discussion. 🌱Interactive. 🌱Interdisciplinary. Learning by experience. Learners should be actively involved in their own learning. Education is life itself. In many ways, a teacher or instructor is a facilitator. At Quality PC Training, we believe that learners should be part of the process. A big part. The concepts our learners retain after taking a training session with us is our WHY. Not to show off how much we know. We could lecture all day (lol). Sometimes when I am working with a group of adult learners, they tell me that they need me to "come back to the office with them." I usually laugh and then I tell them something like what Glinda the Good Witch says to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz - "You've always had the power, my dear." The biggest takeaway from experiencing a training session with us is that the learner feels empowered, not dependent on the teacher. They can take what they've learned back to the office and use those skills immediately.
