One of our research partners at Logan Hospital, Dr Leslie Gan, presented at the Logan and Beaudesert Health Service Research Symposium 2024, last week. Here she is talking about the #DIAMONDproject's Attention Atlas. The #AttentionAtlas (AA) is a novel virtual reality attention assessment platform assessing 'neglect' in visuospatial attention. Deficits in visuospatial #attention, known as 'neglect', are common following brain injury, but underdiagnosed and poorly treated. This can result in long-term cognitive #disability. In clinical settings, neglect is most often assessed using simple pen-and-paper tests, which cannot characterise the full spectrum of neglect. Could the Attention Atlas fill this gap? Stephanie E. Crowe, Bahareh Shahri, Thammathip Piumsomboon, Simon Hoermann, and Annalu Waller, all affiliated with the University of Canterbury and the University of Dundee, explore the transformative potential of Virtual Reality (VR) in brain injury rehabilitation. Their research addresses how traditional communication between therapists and patients can be effectively adapted to digital formats, crucially impacting the therapeutic alliance (TA), which relies heavily on interpersonal bonds and communication. Through observations and semi-structured interviews, the study highlights notable shifts in patient-therapist interactions with the introduction of VR: informal dialogue decreased, yet shared laughter and therapist feedback saw an uptick. Despite the visual disconnection imposed by VR headsets, therapists maintained engagement through guiding gestures and verbal communication. Interviews underscored the importance therapists place on rapport-building, emphasizing mutual reliance for expertise and reassurance. This research suggests that while VR can enhance traditional rehabilitation practices, it also presents challenges in maintaining effective collaboration and communication. Future VR systems must be designed with a human-centered approach, incorporating features that address these interactional shifts to ultimately improve therapeutic outcomes for acquired brain injury (ABI) rehabilitation.
