One of our research partners at Logan Hospital, Dr Leslie Gan, presented at the Logan and Beaudesert Health Service Research Symposium 2024, last week. Here she is talking about the #DIAMONDproject's Attention Atlas. The #AttentionAtlas (AA) is a novel virtual reality attention assessment platform assessing 'neglect' in visuospatial attention. Deficits in visuospatial #attention, known as 'neglect', are common following brain injury, but underdiagnosed and poorly treated. This can result in long-term cognitive #disability. In clinical settings, neglect is most often assessed using simple pen-and-paper tests, which cannot characterise the full spectrum of neglect. Could the Attention Atlas fill this gap? Over 20,000 publications and 50 meta-analyses show that #VR is powerful in medicine and psychology. It is time to include these therapies in the standard of care. Our aim is to Bring People back to Work. Reintegration after a long absence can be challenging and, through VR, Melimpus can help health practitioners prepare their patients on this journey. https://lnkd.in/eJmMNBzA #ReturntoWork, #Burnout, #MentalHealth, #Reintegration Arnaud Bosteels, Stephanie Delroisse, Brice Dessain, Benoît De Schryver

A New Era in Treating Eating Disorders with VR ⁉️ This time, a VR application is being developed, a therapeutic tool called Awaken Emerse, which will allow patients to experience and overcome their fears, such as the fear of gaining weight. Users will be able to customize their avatar and observe changes in weight, which will initially intensify the fear but will gradually diminish. 📍Professor Christina Ralph-Nirman from the University of Louisville points out the limitations of traditional treatment methods and therefore suggests such an innovative approach. Of course, for now, such methods are being used as research topics)) But it will be interesting to observe the dynamics of development 👌 #technology #news #medicine #psychotherapy #innovation #psychology #virtualreality #vr #ar

This is significant, and I'm interested in following this area of research...
Have you ever heard something that others cannot – such as your name being called? Hearing voices or other noises that aren’t there is very common. About 10% of people report experiencing auditory hallucinations at some point in their life. Our Professor of Clinical Psychology and Digital Health, Neil Thomas is currently testing the delivery of a new form of treatment for auditory hallucinations known as avatar therapy. "Avatar therapy allows a person to create a virtual representation of the voice or voices, which looks and sounds like what they are experiencing. This can help people regain power in the “relationship” as they interact with the voice character, supported by a therapist." Measuring #fNIRS during #VR / #AR use can provide information on brain activation during e.g. task performance or treatment intervention. They are popular in various research fields, such as #psychology, #cognitive studies, and #clinical research. As an example, Landowska et al.🔗 designed an AR-based everyday task for an 8-week cognitive training in older adults while using fNIRS to measure mental workload and assess its effectiveness. The Brite Frontal is perfect for frontal measurements and suitable for simultaneous fNIRS and VR/AR studies. 🔗https://zurl.co/Lbem

Another week passes and another paper is published examining the impact of #virtualreality in #healthcare #learning around upper extremity recovery following stroke. I continue to believe that this is one application of #VR that huge potential. Upper extremity recovery requires repetition, spaced over time. That is what the #brain needs and what the data tell us. The best way to achieve that aim is to have the therapy available at home! I continue to follow this space and to be optimistic!

I am happy to announce the publication of my first Ph.D. paper! 📰 Virtual Reality Breathing Interventions for Mental Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials 📌 Our study examined the effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) breathing interventions (breathwork and breath awareness) as compared to non-VR in mental health outcomes and physiological stress measures. 💡 VR breathing interventions are not more effective than non-VR at improving mental health, including stress, anxiety, mood, and physiological stress (HR and HRV). There was also no evidence that participants preferred or would use VR more than non-VR. These findings underscore the importance of further exploration into potential advantages over longer-term VR implementation. 🙌 My deep gratitude to my supervision team Elke Vlemincx Georgia Panayiotou Raymond Ostelo Marcel Adriaanse and collaborator George Burchell for their invaluable support in facilitating this research. VR can be used as a tool to improve mental health.
Wonderful to see our VR program showcased on Nine News Melbourne last night! As Orygen researcher Dr Imogen Bell puts it, this innovative treatment is on track to play a leading role in "addressing the gaps in care for young people". It follows on from a landmark review, published in Nature Magazine and led by Orygen Digital, which found that VR has the potential to transform youth mental health. New research shows we can measure your level of immersion in virtual reality using brainwaves! 🧠⚡️ EEG, which measures brain activity at the scalp, can be used to assess your "presence" (feeling of being in the virtual world) without interrupting your experience with intrusive questionnaires. This could help lead to the development of more immersive VR experiences and personalized user interactions. #VR #virtualreality #neuroscience #psychology #EEG #immersion #userinterface #presence #attention #braincomputerinterface #BCI https://lnkd.in/eVY6r_iW

What's Superhero Therapy in chronic pain management? 🌟 Chronic pain affects one in five Australians, and while various management strategies exist, a definitive cure remains elusive. Researchers at the University of South Australia are diving into the exciting world of 'superhero therapy.' 👊 This innovative approach uses cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology, allowing individuals to virtually become superheroes, convincing their brain and nervous system that their bodies are invincible against pain. The fusion of neuroscientific principles and VR offers a fascinating and opportunity-filled field. It has the potential to be the breakthrough we've been waiting for in tackling chronic pain. What are your thoughts on superhero therapy? 👀 #superherotherapy #chronicpain #silvradventures #virtualreality #olderadults #VR #agedcare #innovation
