I am excited to share the culmination of a project that has been made possible thanks to the support of the ETH Zurich - Chair of Sustainable Construction and Guillaume Habert, who helped us design the workshop program and propose the speakers who have profoundly enriched this process. 🎉
With the backing of key authors in social sustainability, such as Anna Heringer and Isadora Hastings, and the invaluable field experiences in emergency contexts of Giulia Celentano, we were provided with essential tools to identify the specific needs of families and their contexts. The insights from Dominique Gauzin-Müller on "The Beauty of Architecture" added an aesthetic dimension to our approach, emphasizing the importance of creating spaces that are not only functional and sustainable but also beautiful and culturally significant.
In terms of environmental sustainability, we delved deeply into the topic with contributions from Yi Du, who enlightened us on the use of tannins and sustainable materials in ecological construction. Luis Fernando Guerrero Baca shared his expertise on building with earth, while Lilian Garcia-Alonso demonstrated how agave waste can be transformed into saponins, highlighting the value of agricultural by-products.
Furthermore, experts like Rodrigo Fernandez of TERRABLOC and Lukas Bauman of LEHMAG AG helped us understand the challenges of introducing materials like adobe into a market dominated by concrete. Sessions led by Philippe Block, Alfonso Luna, and Dinorah Martínez Schulte guided us in the use of new technologies and digital fabrication applied to construction.
The experiences shared by Israel Espín of the C333 collective, Solano Benítez, Mauricio Cervantes, Gonzalo Hernández, and Los Macurichos further enriched our approach. Additionally, the research conducted by Pablo Pérez-Ramos in the Etla Valley and his dialogue with mezcal producers were essential for the development of our proposals.
With this knowledge and the collaboration of all those mentioned, we have developed "Seed Projects" that reflect a deep understanding of social, environmental, and market sustainability, with a clear focus on practical application and real impact in the communities involved.

Estamos orgullosos de presentar una pieza multidimensional que aborda dos problemáticas actuales: la construcción con materiales derivados del cemento en comunidades de Oaxaca y la producción de mezcal. 🌱🔨
Durante los últimos 10 años de experiencias creativas, hemos enfrentado numerosos desafíos. ¿Cómo transformar los desechos de la destilación del mezcal en materiales de construcción más resilientes? 📖 ¿Cómo mitigar el impacto ambiental de la producción de mezcal mientras ofrecemos soluciones sostenibles para las comunidades que dependen de materiales convencionales? 🌎
La propuesta de Grounded Materials Mexico, desarrollada en colaboración con ETH Zurich - Chair of Sustainable Construction, actuó como un agente dinámico y externo, reuniendo diversas visiones para proponer soluciones transformadoras. Estas soluciones emergieron de las intersecciones entre actores clave. Sin embargo, el valor del proceso reside en las diferencias y perspectivas diversas, creando un cuerpo en creación que aspira a ser dinámico y sostenible. Un cuerpo autárquico. 🌟
📚 Un cortometraje documental y un libro documentan este proceso transformador, explorando metodologías de investigación-acción y pedagogía, ofreciendo una visión integrada y sostenible para el futuro. 🌟
