"Is football really worth it?” I asked Rik. ⚽   Even though it’s been raining most days, it’s supposedly summer here in Europe. 🌧️🌦️ Every four years, this means the European Championship football is being played. 🏆   Rik, of course, is watching all of it. This year, Germany is hosting the tournament, and it's expected to boost tourism revenue by 1 billion euros. 💰   While that sounds impressive, it's only a 0.1% increase in the German economy for this quarter. This raises an important question: is it worth it? 🤔 Events like this bring a wave of overtourism. 🌊   Yes, accommodations, restaurants, and bars see a temporary boost, but the benefits are short-lived and concentrated in specific areas.   As a Dutchy, with our team reaching as far as the semi-finals, I understand the excitement. I even enjoyed a few matches in a packed, lively orange bar. 🦁 But how would I feel if I were a German local? 🇩🇪   Despite efforts to spread matches across the country and promote train travel, it still feels like overtourism.   What are your thoughts on mega sports events and overtourism? Zack Vosen, PhD nailed it last week in his Expert Analysis about sport in North Carolina. Case in point: Yesterday Charlotte City Council approved an $800M renovation to Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC home, Bank of America Stadium. https://lnkd.in/gTPhySUX Interestingly, the article above notes that, "The city's [of Charlotte's] investment would be funded by existing hospitality and tourism tax resources, which are required by the state to be spent on projects to support the city's tourism economy." Yet another indicator of the direct connection between facility and venue infrastructure and the broader visitor economy. Additional reporting is specifically calling out the enhanced opportunity to host other major events following renovations, as Dr. Vosen highlighted in his piece. No doubt the expansion of opportunity for additional revenue generation AND the creative uses driving huge visibility occurring now (ala, Lucas Oil Stadium and the USA Swimming Olympic Trials that just wrapped) played a part in the future vision for the venue as well...among other factors. Our team expects to see continued movement in the venue development/renovation space as more and more global hosting opportunities emerge, lifespan of facilities expires, franchise leverage expands, and increased capital/revenue pressures mount.
