📢 New blog! SLICES-RI contributes to the GreenDIGIT Project: Lowering the Environmental Impact of Digital Research Infrastructures Digital infrastructures are essential for research, but they also contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. ♻ The new GreenDIGIT project is dedicated to addressing this challenge by creating solutions to minimize the environmental footprint of research infrastructures. The project brings together 4 major distributed Digital Research Infrastructures at different lifecycle stages: EBRAINS, EGI, SLICES-RI, and SoBigData Research Infrastructure, to tackle the challenge of environmental impact reduction with the ambition to provide solutions that are reusable across the whole spectrum of digital services on the ESFRI - European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures landscape and play a role model. This project will: ➡Develop a framework for increasing sustainability of digital RIs ➡Create tools to help researchers design eco-friendly digital applications ➡Educate service providers on good practices for green infrastructure management Read more about the project in our new blog: https://lnkd.in/ePtrBN2c #GreenDIGIT #Sustainability #ResearchInfrastructures #SLICES

It was great to see so many familiar faces at the Soils in the South East Conference last week! Here are our top highlights: 👉 Emma Hellawell of Leap Environmental demonstrating the importance of materials management early in the development phase of projects, and how this can dramatically reduce carbon emissions. 👉 Peter Hewitt of Laing O'Rourke's insightful discussion on how using different labs and their methods can lead to variability in reported results, and how this affects on-site decisions. 👉 Paula Carey of Carbon8, who delivered a great presentation on mineralisation, a sustainable on-site process that simultaneously withdraws CO2 from the atmosphere while creating re-usable aggregates. It was a bonus to see Tom Harris deliver the age-old debate of to WAC or not to WAC, followed by a great panel and discussion. By using terms such as “WAC” instead of “LAC” and “muck away” are we, as an industry, planting the seed that soils are a waste that need to be disposed of, instead of a valuable resource that could be vital in another development project? Let us know your thoughts! #KalexTeam #SoilsInTheSouthEast #MiniWASCON #Conference #Networking #Innovation #SoilScience #WasteManagement

ePAPHOS TEAMWORK AT Energy & Solidarity – Putting the Plan for Grids into Action Since its foundation in 2009, RGI has been promoting pathways for Europe to build the necessary grid and renewable infrastructure for the energy transition protecting nature, restoring biodiversity, and creating meaningful involvement of local communities. Now, with the Action Plan for Grids, these aspects are as relevant as ever and increasingly interlinked. Our conference will therefore bring them together while focusing on solidarity and cooperation in times when polarisation is growing bigger every day. Why Energy & Solidarity? As a basic value of the European Union, solidarity is key for decarbonisation considering the energy challenges that European countries face cannot be solved unilaterally. Decision-making must be fair and just, especially for the wildlife and communities that are most affected by infrastructure build-up. It seems a difficult task, but strategies exist to harness the positive environmental, social, and economic benefits of the energy transition, including: #Innovation4Solidarity – Creating technological and market innovation that allow for affordable energy for consumers and new approaches towards grid expansion, optimisation, and digitalisation #SolidarityWithNature – Contributing to biodiversity targets and nature-positive solutions #SolidarityWithPeople – Involving affected communities in decision-making processes, and creating long-term local benefits for them

🚨 New article 🚨 🔐A formal model for reliable digital transformation of water distribution networks In 2023, our #SUNRISE_Project partner, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, published a cutting-edge article on modernizing outdated water distribution systems through digital transformation. These systems face frequent challenges, and UPM's formal model, based on ternary relational semantics, offers a flexible process for improving efficiency while ensuring reliable data generation and system functionality. The article also includes a proof of concept from a real-world scenario, showing the practical benefits of this approach. 💡 A major step toward smarter, more efficient water infrastructure! Stay tuned, to explore our #SUNRISE_Project partners research and innovation work! Available at 👇 https://lnkd.in/gazi2dNT #DigitalTransformation #WaterDistribution #Innovation #Sustainability
