A large, welcoming front patio serves as an invitation to discover the magic that’s happening at the WesleyLife campus in Des Moines’ Drake neighborhood. Slingshot partnered with WesleyLife to repurpose a former Drake University academic building into a multi-function space that includes a new restaurant, a hub for intergenerational interaction, and the home of WesleyLife’s Meals on Wheels program, which can provide 3,000 healthy meals to seniors and military veterans every day. The basement of the building holds a hydroponic farm that produces 20,000 pounds of fresh produce every year. The restaurant, Hugo’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, was recently opened by renowned Des Moines chef Lynn Pritchard. It invites older adults, college students, Drake neighborhood residents, and foodies to experience its open-concept kitchen and expansive patio just steps away from the Drake University campus. Together, these enterprises promote wellness, combat isolation in older adults, and spark meaningful connection among diverse residents of this community. One of the things I like best about this playground is how effective the simple customisations are - the run-way markings and control tower facade make the aviation theme obvious without having to spell it out or compromising the play value of the structure.
Here's a very tidy community playground at Hobsonville War Memorial Park designed by Bespoke Landscape Architects. The three-tower structure is designed to provide graduated levels of challenge for kids aged 3+ and we worked with Leigh Wilson to customize the tallest of the three with control tower facades and a runway scaling wall - a nod to Hobsonville's rich aviation history. I would argue that the two quickest ways to promote both walkability and economic development in the suburbs are: - Transforming commercial corridors aligned with shopping centers into mixed-use multimodal main streets - Allow corner stores in selected residential streets
Small-scale mixed-use buildings are popular in Norton Commons, a new urbanist community in Louisville; here’s the latest example. Reviving the lost art of Main Street buildings

This is an amazing article! Working with Theaster Gates has had a profound impact on how I currently perceive and approach community-based development. Can we, as architects, create a sustainable practice that focuses on a specific community and use our design-thinking skills to address multiple issues including; zoning, code, planning, job creation, permanent buildings, and temporary installations?
“It’s the Versaille of the Southside." Neighborhood parties with house music are “integenerational, intergender, and interracial.” Theaster Gates on Kenwood Gardens, a stunning community space that he created out of 13 vacant lots through his nonprofit Rebuild Foundation with support from Reimagining the Civic Commons. #diversity #landscape #chicago #publicspace American Society of Landscape Architects https://lnkd.in/eZFp4P9d

Originally Almshouses, St Mark’s College, Audley End, Essex, was built between 1605 - 1614 by Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, on the site of the former Walden Abbey. It provided 20 single-cell units around two courtyards with a chapel, hall, and kitchen in the central range. This layout essentially still exists. It fell into disrepair and agricultural use, but when Audley End was purchased for the nation in 1948, the former Almshouses were given to the Diocese of Chelmsford, who restored it as a 12-unit college for retired clergy and most recently used it as a youth training centre. HB&P have welcomed a recent scheme to carry out a further restoration and convert the college into four dwellings. Most of the alterations seek to redress or alter the 1950s interventions carried out by the church, and it effectively utilises the historic planform. Two semi-glazed ‘cloisters’ are proposed within the courtyards to provide a link between the rooms of the north and south houses and avoid additional internal openings in the early 17th-century building fabric. Our Casework Committee supported the concept, but had concerns with the design and the poor interplay between the old and the new, and have advised that further design work and refinement are needed to ensure a very high-quality, lightweight structure that reflects and complements the Grade I status of the host heritage asset. 📷: Kay Pilsbury Thomas Architects #Heritage #Planning #Casework #EverydayHeritage #HistoricBuildings #HistoricPlaces #AudleyEnd #Essex

What’s the Purpose of this? When TEAMS talk about learning about purpose and what does purpose mean to individuals and the organisation, listen to young Andrew and Janet Schofield discuss what the students are achieving through hard work and a clear goal below Queen's University Belfast students team challenge:
Andrew Impressed as Exciting Progress Continues. Today, Andrew, one of our BLAST participants, visited Lislagan Farm to check in on Day 3 of our ‘Garden Project.’ The team from Splash Projects, alongside students from Queen's University Belfast Business School, is hard at work creating a beautiful sensory garden and building a new woodworking shed for us here at CAN. Andrew was thoroughly impressed with the progress so far and can’t wait to enjoy the finished garden when it’s complete! #LislaganFarm #SocialImpact #GardenTransformation #QueensUniversityBelfast #CommunityProjects #Teamwork #Inclusion #Sustainability #SplashProjects

People love tall buildings. They always have and always will. Tall buildings extend our horizons and I believe there’s something innately human about the desire to metaphorically reach towards the stars. Buildings that taper into the sky aren’t new. Throughout history, they have created a strong sense of identity and place, enabling cities to be known and loved for the striking silhouettes they trace across the sky. Co-created by their users and shaped by the community around them, tall buildings – be they brand new or old structures adapted and re-used – are an incredible way of breathing new life into the city and a beautiful way of sustaining London. However, the days of sterile, single-use tall towers will soon be a thing of the past. We should start to imagine tall buildings as ‘vertical villages’ supporting a rich mix of uses. These villages need to be punctuated with ‘village commons’ that provide spaces for interaction to promote wellbeing, as well as being centres of innovation, creativity and community. Nice Article about the Lawn as a symbol of American identity, it is indeed an inspired symbol of suburban Housing around the world. I presume this evolved from the historic aspirations from Europe to America and now across the world. As an urban designer, we struggle to get rid of this image of ideal home as real-estate agents get better returns selling this image more than other more eco-friendly solutions!
