The Cree Nation has a Cree Nation Government and 9 local or municipal-type governments that deliver municipal-type services. The Cree Nation delivers Policing, Justice, language and culture, environmental assessment, etc. Subs run an airline, construction companies, trucking, catering camps, real estate, heritage funds, and a pension plan. And manage political relationships with Canada, Québec, and development entities. We have our own Health and Education Boards. Every Nation has municipal-type governments. Someone has to run the water, sewer, road maintenance etc, etc. The basic stuff. The AFN has not been a strong defender and not visionary. And Canada, a young country, still has an inferior complex. And thus actions and policies to thwart the First Nations as they fear their original sovereignty. And many First Nation leaders' priority is not to acquire the basic needs of their people but to advocate for the unacheivable in present political and legal context. The FN citizen's basic needs are the most important. If given those they will aspire to greater autonomy. Being a Nation does not mean you have to have your own country. There can be many Nations in a Country. Keep pushing the sovereignty awareness issue, Russel. We have a long way to go.

Super interesting role alert, but please note that this role is more often titled as an Evaluation Analyst. So why is it so interesting? The work this person does validates (or invalidates) all of the strategic initiatives that are launched to solve a particular problem. Whether it's related to process, organizational structure, or service delivery, once the rubber has met the road, this is the person that looks for the proof in the proverbial pudding (I can't think of any more metaphors to cram into that sentence, but trust me, I tried). Wondering if a new program is actually living up to the hype? Time for the Evaluation Analyst to work their magic. Skeptical that a strategic initiative is meeting the promised outcomes? Evaluation. Need to know what the impacts have been after rolling out different service models? Evaluation, evaluation, evaluation! In other words, this person (and the rest of the team) makes sure that our compasses are actually pointing true north. Exciting? Well, I can't think of too many other roles outside of the ELT/SLT that can have as much of an impact on organizational direction!
