Promoting the transition to sustainable mobility in inland modes of transport, including roads, railways, inland waterways, and intermodal systems, is of utmost importance in enhancing the well-being of impoverished communities. In 2024, the staggering reality persists: over one billion individuals reside more than two kilometers away from a dependable road network. Moreover, a disheartening statistic reveals that one in six women worldwide refrain from job searching due to concerns about harassment during transit. Additionally, the devastating impact of road crashes cannot be overlooked, with over 1 million lives lost annually, an alarming 92% of which occur in developing countries. Addressing these challenges through sustainable mobility initiatives can significantly transform the livelihoods and safety of these vulnerable populations. To overcome these barriers the World Bank Vice President for Infrastructure shares his thoughts https://lnkd.in/dWYRbtTB

Delighted to see that the potential of freight transport and logistics regarding sustainable transport is starting to be recognized! We need to unlock that potential. Take a look at the manifesto. #logistics #Freight #Transport #UNSupplyChain
We are thrilled to announce that the Manifesto for intermodal, low-carbon, efficient and resilient freight transport and logistics was launched today at the first United Nations Global Supply Chain Forum organised by United Nations Trade and Development and the Government of Barbados from 21 – 24 May 2024. Read and sign on to the manifesto: https://lnkd.in/exn-XX3J #TransformingFreightTransport - what does it take? Governments and businesses need to prioritise systems that efficiently and resiliently combine low-carbon services from the first to the last mile, be that local or intercontinental. Urgent actions are needed to transition to zero emission fuels and renewable energy, optimising logistics systems and creating local and circular value chains. Why do we need this transformation? In a world of interconnected challenges, our economies and societies must transform to remain competitive, equitable and resilient, while keeping global warming to 1.5ºC. Accelerating the transformation of freight transport and logistics is among the most impactful steps the global community can take to enable overall positive socio-economic transformations by mid-century. SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport and Kuehne Foundation Climate Action, together with CONCITO, IDDRI, International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), Smart Freight Centre, UIC - International union of railways #UICrail and World Resources Institute have co-initiated this manifesto. So far, we have already gathered support from 30+ multi-stakeholder organisations. Join us and be part of the change! #freight #logistics #transport #UNSupplyChain

Public transport contributes directly to 14 out of 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). 📝 This is showcased clearly in UITP’s latest report ‘Why public transport is key to achieve the SDGs’, which outlines how 12 benefits of public transport directly contribute to specific targets within the SDGs. Each benefit is also linked to two case studies from across the globe. 🌍 Discover more here: https://lnkd.in/eNHRTZYD #PublicTransport

Our Transport Strategy sets the vision for transport in the East and the investment priorities needed to deliver it. Supporting our strategy are four priorities: 📉 Decarbonising Transport - 42% of the region's carbon emissions come from transport. We need to reduce this, meet net-zero targets and create a greener and healthier region. 🏙 Connecting Growing Places - Creating better links between our fastest growing towns and cities will provide people with access to jobs, supplies, services, and learning. 🚜 Energising Coastal and Rural Communities - 21% of the region’s population live on the coast and 33% live in rural areas. With the right investment, transport can play a key role to level up our rural and coastal areas. 🚢 Unlocking Global Gateways – with 13 ports and three airports, it’s important our gateways are well-connected to help UK businesses thrive and boost the nation’s economy. Transportation is essential for economic growth and employment, but it's also a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve sustainable development, we need to resolve these trade-offs. Sustainable transport is the solution. It's defined as "the provision of services and infrastructure for the mobility of people and goods — advancing economic and social development to benefit today’s and future generations — in a manner that is safe, affordable, accessible, efficient, and resilient, while minimizing carbon and other emissions and environmental impacts.” Sustainable transport is not an end in itself, but a means to achieve sustainable development. It's a cross-cutting accelerator that can fast-track progress towards other crucial goals, such as eradicating poverty in all its dimensions, reducing inequality, empowering women, and combatting climate change.
