Highlights from this week’s Velo-city conference: Emil Rensvala from the Norwegian Cyclists’ Association, shares key advice for #cities, associations and related initiatives battling ‘Bikelash’ – resistance to #cycling infrastructure projects: 1. Gather around a CLEAR vision 2. SHARE ownership 3. Include the SILENT majority 4. Ask the RIGHT questions 5. Minimize ASYMMETRY of power between ‘expert’ and ‘citizen’ 6. View communication as a MARATHON (consistency wins the race, but turn it into a sprint when you see DISINFORMATION being spread!) 7. VISUALISE the future and the benefits 8. Street or road? This week is European Mobility Week, and I’m wondering, until we have an Australian Mobility Week, can we use it as a chance to explore our own mobility choices, understand more deeply the challenges for transport reform, and new options emerging? Attending the AITPM - Leadership in Traffic and Transport National Conference last week it couldn’t be any more clearer, thanks to Marco Te Brömmelstroet, our current transport system is not sustainable into the future. A significant challenge indeed! But he shared with us that there are some simple things we can all do: ⭐️Change the language we use; and ⭐️Challenge our unconsciousness. This may be as simple as changing the narrative of a local community page complaining about a new refuge island making it too narrow for cars - a real example, but one of which others contributed to without me needing to, because it was about their lived experiences of trying to cross a roundabout approach with their children on bikes being the only route to school for our community. What I’ve learned; change takes compassion, empathy, and incremental steps. Let’s make sure we are learning together and see what small changes we can make this week. #aitpm2023 #mobility #ghd #futurecommunities
