The goldfish takes the water around it for granted; it’s its entire world. 🌊 Similarly, we are so deeply embedded in our own culture that we often don’t realize how much it shapes our perceptions, thoughts, and actions. 🌍 Culture is the “water” we “swim” in. The fun fact: We only notice it when we encounter a different environment. 🌐 In such situations, people behave differently, communicate differently, and act in ways we are not used to. And sometimes this can get tough. A so-called culture shock can occur. It’s a serious matter, and the person affected can feel lonely, depressed, and overwhelmed. In honor of 45 years of employee ownership, we are recognizing employees who have 45 years or more of service at Davey throughout 2024. Jack Bloomfield, senior vice president, Lakes Region, U.S. Utility Services, recently retired after 48 years of service, but not before leaving behind some final words of wisdom. What is your advice for having a long and rewarding career at Davey? "One of my favorite sayings is “I work today for tomorrow." The product I produce today will ensure that I have a job tomorrow. I always worked hard and this company recognized that hard work. If you are offered an opportunity, look at it hard and take advantage of those opportunities. I took chances and was rewarded for it over the years." What makes Davey special? "Something that makes us special is the way we invest in people. The SEED (Science, Employee Education & Development) Campus project is just phenomenal. The SEED Campus project, D.I.T.S. (Davey Institute of Tree Sciences) and training opportunities speak to who we are as a company and how we will preserve the future of our company and industry." What's been the most rewarding part of your career? "It’s the people and the relationships I’ve built within the company. I have a lot of great friends that I've watched transition and grow and invested my time back into them. The people and culture of the company have been the most rewarding part of my career." Any final advice for your team? "It is one of the best times to be in line clearance. Utilities are recognizing the importance of our work to protect the infrastructure. My team has the knowledge and the ability to succeed. Take advantage of any training opportunities the company provides. It's a good time to be in the industry, make this a career and buy lots of stock."
