How can we improve health care with data? I just finished reading "A Handbook for Information-Driven Health Care", written by among others Markus Lingman, senior physician and AI Swede of the year 2020. Here are my main takeaways: 📊 We need data in one place! Data is currently fragmented, and split up between different organizations, patient groups and medical specialties. Unified data will offer better insight into health care as a whole. 🤑 We need to look at every step of the patient's journey through health care! For example, a seemingly wise, cost-saving measure in primary care can lead to an unexpected increase in costs in emergency care. To make the most out of health care's resources and provide the best care for the patient, we need to pay attention to every link of the health care chain. 👬 We need to organize the right people! Interdisciplinary teams tend to be more successful at developing and implementing meaningful solutions. In addition to health care staff, we need work together with lawyers, HR and IT specialists, economists, researchers, people with database knowledge, and other professionals. Management needs to be involved and supportive. 🤾♂️ We need a place to play! Data scientists need a "sandbox environment", a space to which they can export data to remodel it, perform experiments and do for example AI analyses. We need to set up this kind of environment to promote meaningful interaction with data, all while respecting privacy and integrity. 👨🏫 We need to study implementation of AI tools in health care! AI has the potential to give us new insights, but implementation remains difficult. More in-depth research is needed to provide guidance when developing and implementing future AI solutions in health care. Link to book in comments!
