Its not too late to help a young person find summer work opportunities. If you are a transition or special education teacher, here are five things you can do: Resume Assistance: Help the student create or refine a one-page visual resume. Even if they lack work experience, they can showcase their interests, volunteer work, hobbies, and passions. Networking: Tap into your family and friends network. Do any of them know of anyone who might need assistance during the summer? School Guidance Department: Reach out to the school guidance department to explore local employers' needs and potential job opportunities. Mayor's Youth Summer Employment Program: Check with your city hall to inquire about any Mayor's Youth Summer Employment programs available. Small Business Initiatives: Encourage the exploration of small business ideas. Perhaps the student can fulfill neighbors' needs such as errands, lawn care, or dog walking. #youthemployment #summerjobs

What I like about this piece is the suggestion for prospective employers to hold Q& A sessions before students or postdocs prepare their resume and apply and interview for a job posting. The questions that prospective applicants ask can help employers craft better job descriptions and help the applicants craft better resumes. Brilliant modification of the hiring process because these additional Q&A sessions can bring in more qualified applicants, increase pool of URM applicants, and reduce the number of weak applications.

Getting a part-time job while in high school can provide teenagers with a wealth of valuable skills, experiences and benefits that will serve them well beyond their school years. Though juggling school, activities, social lives and employment can be challenging, the rewards of working as a teen outweigh the demands.
