🌎Today on #EarthDay, WECAN is launching a new resource in the fight for environmental justice and support for women land defenders in the LAC region! The "Escazú Agreement Toolkit for Women Land Defenders and Frontline Communities" equips women to navigate their country's laws to achieve the protections of the Escazú Agreement. One of the most important things we can do to protect and defend Mother Earth is to stand up and support women land defenders globally! The Escazú Agreement in Latin America and the Caribbean, represents a landmark achievement in the pursuit of environmental justice, transparency, and sustainable development across the Latin American and Caribbean region. However, the journey to accessing these rights can be fraught with legal complexities and barriers, particularly for women who are at the forefront of defending their land and communities. These toolkits aim to support the transformative potential of this historic Agreement to build a thriving and equitable future for all, including those courageous individuals defending land and ecosystems. The toolkit was developed by the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) with support from the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice. Gratitude Day 11, Part 2: I'm grateful for Erik Fleming having me on his podcast in January to talk about environmental justice. (I come on roughly halfway through but the entire episode is excellent). Apparently this quote from my website was what prompted Erik to bring me on. “The inextricable connection between social oppression and environmental degradation means a solution for either must tackle both. In fact, the intersections between racism, sexism, classism, extractive natural resource use, pollution, health and climate change are firmly entrenched, and artificial compartmentalization creates gaps and delays that we cannot afford. An environmental movement that does not proactively correct inequitable distribution of its costs and benefits is failing to fully live up to its promise.” ~ Elizabeth Silleck La Rue I'm also grateful that there is increasing recognition that we cannot divorce environmental conservation and sustainability from issues of power, equity, and justice. There is backlash to paying more than lip service to tackling these issues holistically, no doubt. But we keep going anyway. Safety for Voices: Call for Applications for Subgrants Deadline Date: April 22, 2024 The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) has announced an open call for subgrants to support land and environmental women human rights defenders (WHRDs) in their work to promote safety and prevent violations against them. These grants are designed to support the development and implementation of holistic safety strategies, including research, advocacy, and capacity building. The grants are primarily intended to enhance the safety of WHRDs rather than to support their environmental rights defense efforts directly. The amount requested in the project proposals can range from USD 5,000 to USD 15,000 depending on the scope and scale of the proposed intervention. The activities should be implemented and reporting finalized by 30 December 2024. #Environment and justice advocacy group, the Network for Environment and Climate Justice (NECJ) has called on the government and development partners to protect and promote all #humanrights for #victims of Cyclone Idai. A total of 279 individuals were declared missing since the cyclone hit Chimanimani District in 2019.In a statement, the #advocacy group said the government should ensure advancement of civil and political rights in the wake of natural disasters. “It is critical for the #government and #development partners to ensure that affected #communities have the necessary capacity to adapt to climate change particularly those that are most #vulnerable . There is need to devote resources towards the realization of socialization, economic and cultural rights of these.
