❓ Can large language models (LLMs) like #ChatGPT estimate public opinion about global warming? Read this empirical assessment of algorithmic fidelity and bias to find out. 🤔 The ability of LLMs to emulate human thoughts and behaviors raises an interesting question: can these models estimate human opinions about #globalwarming? This PLOS Climate research article found that LLMs such as ChatGPT can estimate public opinion about global warming, with ChatGPT-4 outperforming ChatGPT-3.5. Prompting LLMs with information about public engagement with global warming (e.g., issue involvement) yields better estimates than using demographics alone. 👩🏾👨🏽 #Climatechange affects everyone, but not equally. In this analysis, the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication explores gender differences in climate change knowledge, beliefs, risk perceptions and policy attitudes. Their new article shows how, in high per-capita emissions and income countries, more women (36%) are alarmed about climate change than men (30%). And women are also less doubtful or dismissive (11%) about climate change than men (20%). However, in low per-capita emissions and income countries, women (44%) and men (45%) are about equally alarmed about climate change. 🤔 Should we change the term we use for #climatechange? 🌏 The terms #globalwarming, #climatecrisis, #climateemergency and #climatejustice each draw attention to different aspects of climate change. Researchers have explored the various ways that people react to terminology. Overall, climate change and global warming were rated as most familiar and most concerning, and climate justice the least, with ratings for climate crisis and climate emergency falling in between.
