HERS Rater Spring Class 2024 A big shout out to the great folks at The Studio for High Performance, Design and Construction. What a great space to teach building science. This space was built to Passive House standards and in some cases, with repurposed materials. I love it! Our students will be taking measurements, doing performance testing, and modeling this building as part of their training tomorrow. It's great they get to experience a design that's a little (dare I say a lot) different than what they may be used to seeing. Thank you Nicholas Falkoff, and all the folks who helped design such an amazing space for people to come and learn & grow together. Fun Fact: The logo was designed based on the design of the solar panels placed in an optimal direction for sun exposure while simultaneously providing shading for the front windows to reduce overheating in the summer while taking advantage of the radiant heat from the sun in the colder months. This is proof positive that when we step back, think things through, and pull on our resources - we can design amazing spaces! #sustainability #NEHERS #PSD #BuildingScience #PassiveDesign

Nosing or no nosing? During a recent site visit to The West Coast Farmhouse, we asked Breton Construction to mock up this prototype to help our client decide exactly how they want their oak stairs to look and feel. We love getting into the details like this, offering bespoke design solutions to specific problems or concerns. The prototype gave our client the chance to try out a concept, rather than simply imagine it. ‘Nosing’ is the part of the tread that overhangs the riser, creating a lip that deepens the tread. The extra space can make the stairs easier to descend, but the lip can also create a trip hazard on the way up. To ease our client’s concern about the safety of visiting elderly relatives, we proposed this version – no nosing, but including a tread insert for extra grip. Their final decision? No to nosing, yes to tread inserts! #architecture #design #guernsey #stairs
