Ensuring your home is warm in winter and cool in summer. This is one of the topics that this months social media posts and blog is covering. To explain this to every day people, I am drawing a comparison between our New Zealand Building Code and an International Voluntary Standard called Passive House, to explain the short falls in our code and how we can make our homes better. Why open plan spaces don't always work... 👀 While often sought after, it's important to think twice before prioritising an open plan design throughout your home. Spaces must be designed with intention, with different aspects of life requiring quieter, more relaxed environments. Getting this balance right is key to optimise the flow of your entire home. Get it wrong, and your space could feel unnecessarily overwhelming. Find out more about the science behind optimising your home's 'flow': https://lnkd.in/eXxyEM-M #architecturedesign #healthybuildings #architects #renovationproject

Many honestly believe that the NZBC creates a quality healthy comfortable home, and it can, but not when its treated as a design guide. The building code is actually a legal document that all buildings built in New Zealand need to comply with. It is not a design guide to create a healthy comfortable home with low power bills. So when people tell you that their designs are Code Compliant, they have to be. Its not a mark of quality, it’s a legal requirement. When people tell you their designs are to Passive House Standard, then you know you are getting a healthy, comfortable home with lower power bills.
