The IPATC is one of nine flagship centres of excellence to conduct research at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
Achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment is vital for sustainable development. However, women still face numerous institutional or cultural challenges, hindering their ability to thrive in areas such as entrepreneurship, technology, innovation, and contributing effectively to the green economy. Professor Tinuade Adekunbi Ojo (PhD) and Ms. Alison Nyaradzo Zuva authored a policy brief titled "Advancing Sustainable Women’s Economic Empowerment" based on discussions held during a two-day conference under the theme "Women’s Impact: Innovation and Sustainability in Africa Conference (WIISA)" in 2023. #GenderEquality #WomenEmpowerment

🌍 Advancing Gender Equality in Urban Spaces 🚺 City mayors worldwide are taking a stand for gender equality and women's empowerment, recognizing cities as vital arenas for change. Recent commitments at the Global Meeting of Mayors on Gender Equality highlight the urgent need to address issues like violence against women and girls in public spaces. From the streets of Quito to the markets of Cobija, mayors are implementing innovative measures to create safer environments for women, such as improved lighting and access to secure markets. These actions align with the goals of the MAAT project, which strives to foster active citizenship and inclusivity in urban settings. The Quito Declaration, launched by UN Women, outlines concrete steps cities can take to advance gender equality, emphasizing the importance of partnerships and evidence-based approaches. As nearly 30 mayors endorse this commitment, it's clear that cities play a crucial role in building a world where all women can live free from violence. It’s International Development Week! #IDW2024 This year’s #GoForTheGoals theme draws attention to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including #SDG 5 which is focused on achieving gender equality for everyone, everywhere. In Canada, there has been a long and rich history of mobilizing for gender equality and social justice from women’s movements and feminist organizations, but there is still a long way to go to achieve the ambitious goals laid out in the 2030 SDG Agenda. As discussed during #EqualFutures2023, Indigenous, Black, racialized, Northern and rural communities face barriers and challenges when it comes to the availability of and access to basic services, resulting in higher community rates of poverty, food and water insecurity and health concerns. 📑 Recordings and resources from the sessions can be accessed at https://lnkd.in/gEaX_XHW 🔎 Get to know an organization working to advance #SDG5 in your community by using the Network Map: EqualFuturesNetwork.ca/map
