As an HR professional with over 20 years of experience working with top companies like MAS Group, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative impact of well-structured sponsorship programs on career development and leadership advancement. However, creating meaningful and lasting sponsorship relationships isn’t always straightforward. In my recent read, “Four Strategies to Maintain Momentum in Synthetic Sponsorship Programs,” the author provides invaluable insights into how sponsorees can keep their connections strong and productive. Here are some key takeaways from the article: 1. Integrate Mentoring, Coaching, and Sponsorship: Focus on building a personal connection before diving into career discussions. 2. Don’t Assume the Worst: Maintain confidence and remember that both sponsors and sponsorees benefit from the relationship. 3. The Promise of “Weak Contact”: Use minimal yet consistent interactions to keep the relationship active. 4. Finding Shared Experiences: Create opportunities for shared experiences to strengthen the bond and mutual understanding. If you’re involved in sponsorship programs or are looking to improve your own, this article is a must-read! Let’s continue to foster environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and advance. #Leadership #CareerDevelopment #Sponsorship #Mentoring #ProfessionalGrowth

CEO, Association of Sporting Directors; Technical Expert, FIFA; Associate Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Sport Business
It was a pleasure to be invited to contribute to a recent Hawksbee and Jacobs show on talkSPORT regarding our research and applied support for Sporting Directors. Here are some reflections on the challenges we face to successfully implement the role and support the sustainability of football clubs in relation to investor and owner engagement: - Investors and owners should avoid taking advice from those with conflicting interests and agendas - We should provide investors and owners with insights on the nuances of the role as every club is unique and in a continuous state of change - This should include the importance of specific hierarchical/organisational structure considerations, including how this impacts decision-making, resource allocation and power - Information on the intricacies of the talent pool of Sporting Directors is important to understand when making recruitment decisions - Including how to rigorously understand who is a successful Sporting Director based on what they need at any one point - Recruitment should utilise genuine insights to understand who and how people have been successful, alongside who has the potential to take the role There is a significant talent pool of sporting directors with the skills, experiences, capabilities and potential to deliver at an executive level as a Sporting Director in elite professional football. Many of these are members of the Association of Sporting Directors.
