Magical neuro-inclusive spaces exist. Here's how. This week, I had the pleasure of attending the Yellow Ladybugs conference in person. Here are just some of the ways that the conference was supportive, inclusive, accessible, and magical: 📖 Detailed preparation ahead of time with a social story, photos, menus, and expectations clearly set out 🌈 A safe space to be so much more myself, knowing I was surrounded by neurokin (other neurodivergent folks) 🙌 Stimming, movement, sitting how you want, listening how you want, participating how you want. This was all explicitly encouraged with tools, objects, words, modelling and reminders. 🕯️ Dimmed lights. I think I heard that they had the room lights at 25% of the usual level. 🎆 Lots of breaks, and a mix of presentation lengths and presentation styles keeping it interesting 🧠 Presenters communicated in their own ways and styles. Often direct communication, 'odd' wonderful sense of humour, visuals, moving around the stage, calling out awkwardness 👯 The people! Meeting online friends in person was amazing. We prepared each other with details like what we’ll wear and how we like to be greeted. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of connecting with the incredible team at the The STARTedUP Foundation, the amazing McKenna Houston and Allison Lindenschmidt. During our call, something truly serendipitous happened – they mentioned spotting a Sikich mug in their office! 🤩 What are the odds?! Later that day, I received a photo of the said mug in its new home, and I must say, it brought an instant serotonin boost to my day! It's fascinating to think about how one simple gift to a client can find its way to another office, creating an unexpected chain of brand awareness for our company. This small-world story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that meaningful connections can have in the business world. A simple gesture of appreciation can transcend boundaries and extend the reach of your brand far beyond what you might imagine. As noted below, Gnarus recently had a team offsite in Denver. A few takeaways for me personally – * While stepping back from day-to-day leadership can be fraught, for me it has been an extremely gratifying transition. I have been able to emphasize mentoring our new firm leadership / my client teams and keep my hand in recruiting and other strategic issues while (I hope!) leaving plenty of space for Jessica Horewitz and Devin Malaise to pursue their own version of Gnarus. Plus, some ongoing client work! * We were a largely “virtual” firm even pre-COVID, and recent years have only emphasized that trend. So these in-person events are even more critical than they were pre-COVID to reinforce our collegiality. Many of us have the benefit of having known each other for decades, but our newer team members (most recently, Jesus Tobon-Escobedo and Olivia Lees) probably benefitted even more from in-person interactions. * Legacy. It sounds a bit pretentious, but I could not be prouder of Gnarus Advisors LLC than I was looking around the table in Denver. Gnarus was founded with central idea of creating a firm that combined excellence in client work with a collegial and rewarding environment that emphasized mutual respect. Our intention was to be a firm run *for* consultants and *by* consultants and one where the firm works for its consultants and not the other way around. We have managed to maintain and strengthen that vision (temporary detours notwithstanding) and I continue to fervently believe our approach. I left Denver convinced more than ever that our future is bright and that Gnarus will remain an independent firm run by and for consultants and that our commitment to excellence and our belief that “expertise matters” continues to be our bedrock.
