In March this year, we initiated our Innovator in Residence program with Elena Maldonado Suárez, a multidisciplinary design researcher and industrial design engineer. Using mycelium as a medium, the first of her three research pieces delves into the historical context and limitations of human-centred perspectives, sustainability and the pursuit of post-human design practices. “In order to engage better with our everyday-life, solid objects, it is imperative to visualise the presence of materials and delve into the reasons behind designing and producing consumer goods. But what if we go one step further and ask: what is the substrate of our objects? What does it mean to inhabit a material world? What does the term material mean?” Read the whole article now on Medium. https://lnkd.in/eB2DWThu

Happy to tell you about my new engagement as a Fellow at The Centre for Conscious Design (CCD). This means that I will engage in some fascinating topics and network with fascinating people within conscious, evidence-based and human-science informed design! As a practicing architect, my topics of exploration will include: • Learning about architecture from other disciplines, • Applying conscious approach in office projects, • Personal choice, motivation, private clients, private homes, • Applying knowledge from research in human sciences in practice: combining with traditional architectural qualities, • Discovering the interaction between architecture and human sciences from various angles, exploring risks and advantages, • Finding answers to relevant problems in society, I am kicking off… :-) https://lnkd.in/d-BH6EMZ

Join the conversation to redefine ‘well made’ for the 21st century Pearson Lloyd is curating a new exhibition at Yorkton Workshops during London Design Festival 2024, which will bring together a diverse array of people and practices to explore ‘well made’ through new forms of production and materiality that respond to the demands of a more ecological future. We are seeking contributions to this dialogue, highlighting the intersection of creativity, sustainability, and quality. The act of making has driven human and cultural evolution for millennia, elevating our existence and surroundings through ingenuity and innovation. However, in recent history, this creative process has been monetised, industrialised and globalised, resulting in rapid social, economic and environmental change. In our collective effort to respond to these challenges, there is a need to redefine our cultural understanding of what it means to be ‘well made.’ Please submit your contribution via this link before July 15th 2024. https://lnkd.in/dWxAEKEZ

I’m grateful to MAIZE | H-FARM Innovation colleagues for this post, bringing once again the attention to the need of having a long term (sometimes dreaming!) strategic vision. They use the anecdote of the “cathedrals”, but this story can be told in various ways. Nevertheless the end point is only one: doing an effort now accepting that someone in the future will gain the benefit! Think about this, think about tomorrow, think about your children, think about tomorrow of tomorrow (the children of your children) when someone is asking you why you are investing time, energy and money in environmental friendly actions that cost effort today and produce a small (or close to zero) immediate result. Think about this when you take every daily decision!
Have you ever wondered how our obsession with immediate results impacts our long-term future? Unpacking the essence of 'Cathedral Thinking' versus today's rush for instant outcomes, "Design for tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow" by Veronica Pelazzini underscores the critical need for strategic design in navigating short-term gains alongside sustainable, enduring strategies. Read our Cultural Factory's latest article to find out more (and quickly brush up on the history of the stunning Chartres cathedral as well!). 👇
