Joseph Jagger was born in Yorkshire, England in 1830 and worked as an engineer in a cotton factory. With his mechanical expertise and a passion for roulette, Jagger believed that imperfections in roulette wheels made some numbers more likely to appear than others. In 1880, Jagger went to Monte Carlo with six helpers to observe the six roulette wheels at the Beaux-Arts casino. Each person monitored one wheel, noting the results. Jagger discovered that a particular wheel favoured nine specific numbers – 7, 8, 9, 17, 18, 19, 22, 28 and 29. Armed with this insight, Jagger returned to the casino with a plan to capitalize on its tendencies. As expected, the favoured numbers continued to surface, allowing him to amass over £60,000 in winnings over three days – a staggering sum equivalent to nearly $4,000,000.00 (USD) today! The next day, having grown suspicious of its mounting losses, the casino shuffled the wheel positions. Unaware of the change, Jagger initially faced losses. However, his sharp eye caught a discrepancy – a missing scratch absent on the biased wheel. He tracked down the correct wheel and resumed his streak for another two days. The casino, determined to halt Jagger's winning streak, implemented a new tactic – they rotated the metal dividers between numbers nightly to change the wheel’s bias. Despite his best efforts, Jagger couldn't adapt to the shifting odds and suffered losses over two days. Realizing it was time to bow out, he left Monte Carlo and returned home with his winnings. He retired, invested in property and passed away in 1892 - leaving behind a legacy of cunning and fortune. What does this have to do with Match and Fable’s latest role? Not much, really! Just want to give a proper shout out to Blake, Alec Baldwin’s legendary character in Glengary Glen Ross! Blake appears in one scene for less than 10 minutes, but manages to leave a lasting impression. No question that Blake is brash and, just maybe, a bit of a jerk. However, Blake speaks to the soul of entrepreneurs and salespeople. If you want to survive in the business, you gotta close (i.e., produce results). No free rides jn the long run, so Blake’s throwing down of the gauntlet could indeed be seen as a “mission of mercy”. Sales is the closest thing we have to the sports world in terms of reflecting a results-based meritocracy, and Blake lays that bare (in superlatively over the top fashion). Am I excited to be a dad? Hell yeah! But as Blake put it (and reality will reinforce): “Good father? F*** you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here? Close!” Who doesn’t want to be judged in objective fashion (based on results) and know exactly where they stand?
