I recently had the privilege of attending an insightful event organised by our client, Vynco Industries (NZ) Ltd Industries, for their primary advisors.   Vynco, a trailblazer in New Zealand’s electrical components, lighting, and switching products industry, showcased their innovative spirit and commitment to sustainability.   During the event, Managing Director Simon Vale delivered a compelling presentation on the current economic landscape and its impact on their business. Despite the challenges, Vynco’s dedication to their sustainability journey stood out—a mission that resonates deeply with our values at BDO.   Starting with the basics, Vynco tackled packaging waste head-on, a significant step in their sustainability efforts. Simon’s presentation highlighted their impressive strides in using bioplastics and recycled materials. I liked the way that the carbon benefit was explained, eg: ·      Oyster lights: Each unit saves the equivalent CO2 weight of 10 large oranges ·      Batten lights: Each unit saves the equivalent CO2 weight of 10 kiwifruit ·      Under Veranda light fittings: Each unit saves the equivalent CO2 weight of 3 bottles of wine   The real challenge? Encouraging customers to embrace these eco-friendly products. Concerns about appearance, pricing, and the question, “Why should we change?” were met with a powerful response: “Why not lead the way and bring these innovative products to market?”   This event was a reminder that we all have a role to play in driving sustainability forward. Let’s challenge ourselves to be leaders in this journey!

Schneider Electric’s Global Sustainability Consulting Director, Delphine Largeteau will be a part of the 𝐄𝐋𝐕 & 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐄 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 today in the conference theatre two (hall 11). Delphine will be discussing 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐩 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐄 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬. Proper handling and recycling of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) plastics is crucial for creating a circular economy. Closing the loop ensures these plastics don't end up in landfills or the environment, but are instead recovered, processed, and reused in new products. By improving collection, sorting, and recycling infrastructure for e-waste plastics, we can reduce pollution, conserve resources, and drive sustainability. There’s always something exciting happening in the world of packaging, and lately, it’s The EU Green Deal that has people talking. The EU Green Deal is aimed at making Europe the first 'climate neutral' continent by 2050. There are a number of targets set out in the plans, including a 55% emissions reduction by 2030, and a larger reduction of 90% by 2040. For businesses, this means adhering to stricter sustainability regulations, such as reducing their carbon footprint, improving energy efficiency and reducing waste. A lot of brands are going to have to rethink their approach to packaging. Smurfit Westrock recently spoke to edie about what these changes mean for businesses. A major challenge is bridging the gap of where we want to be in terms of a circular economy and the reality we find ourselves in. On most days the gap just seems to be getting bigger. I found this article interesting in that it suggests what to focus on now to get closer to where we want to be.

It’s #EarthDay 🌍 – an important reminder for us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics. Some of the ways we’re reducing our plastic usage at the Museum include: 🖼️ Using eco-friendly, renewable or recyclable materials in our new exhibitions 🛍️ All of our new retail packaging and bags are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved 🪀 We’re reducing the number of plastic toys we sell 🤝 And we’re working with suppliers committed to eco-friendly practices We’re taking things step by step and commissioning research to understand the longer-term action needed to reduce our impact on the planet. We’ll keep sharing our progress as we continue our journey to be greener 💚
