Ground-breaking new research from SNAPP's working group on Wildfires and Human Health, led by University of Washington and The Nature Conservancy, shows US counties with the highest rate of sustained smoke particulate pollution are home to higher numbers of vulnerable people. This research also updates the 2017 wildfire smoke vulnerability assessment, and shows that since 2017, vulnerability to wildfires has increased dramatically in the PNW. Join us in welcoming one of our newest 2024 SNAPP Working Groups: Resilient Rangelands! The Resilient Rangeland working group, led by Michele Bowe from RSPB, Alyona Koshkina from ACBK — Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan, and Otgonsuren Avirmed from Wildlife Conservation Society Mongolia, is working to develop pathways for rangeland management in Kazakhstan and Mongolia to align nature conservation goals with agricultural development. This working group is closely aligned with the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, where ACBK and RSPB are key members of a multinational initiative working to conserve and restore the steppe grassland, wetland and deserts of the region. The Initative was recently announced as a finalist for The Earthshot Prize in the ‘Protect and Restore Nature’ category. While billions are invested in global ecological restoration, most projects lack adequate long-term funding for monitoring efforts, often limited to two years. To maximize resources, we need standardized guidelines for proper monitoring to measure success. This working group, led by Missouri Botanical Garden, University of Minnesota, ETH Zürich, and TNC Colombia will leverage stakeholder networks and reviewing existing datasets, this group will assess if short-term data can predict long-term outcomes and how these vary by environmental conditions. This nomination recognises the dedicated work of our team and partners in protecting and initiating the restoration of the unique steppe ecosystems of Kazakhstan for almost 20 years. From reviving endangered species like the Saiga antelope and Kertagy (Przewalski’s horse) to conserving vast landscapes of over 12 million acres that are critical for biodiversity, and building the knowledge and capacity of the current and next generation of conservationists, we are committed to securing a sustainable future for both people and wildlife and sharing knowledge with fellow teams working across comparable temperate grasslands around the world.
