SNAPP's expert teams deliver rapid solutions to the most critical challenges facing humans and our planet
About us
SNAPP funds science that rapidly leads to tangible and enduring benefits to conservation and sustainable development. To achieve this, SNAPP funds teams of 12-15 people from diverse organizations to gather for 3-4 collaborative sessions over the course of 12-24 months. Building from a clearly articulated opportunity for cross-sectoral collaboration and innovation to influence policy and/or practice, these working groups conceive new ideas, synthesize data relevant to their work, and deliver rapid solutions. Between sessions, members collaborate remotely; work with long-term implementation partners; identify emerging opportunities for tangible, lasting change; develop and test tools and products; and publish research.

Join us in welcoming one of our newest 2024 SNAPP Working Groups: Resilient Rangelands! The Resilient Rangeland working group, led by Michele Bowe from RSPB, Alyona Koshkina from ACBK — Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan, and Otgonsuren Avirmed from Wildlife Conservation Society Mongolia, is working to develop pathways for rangeland management in Kazakhstan and Mongolia to align nature conservation goals with agricultural development. This working group is closely aligned with the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, where ACBK and RSPB are key members of a multinational initiative working to conserve and restore the steppe grassland, wetland and deserts of the region. The Initative was recently announced as a finalist for The Earthshot Prize in the ‘Protect and Restore Nature’ category. #WorkingGroupWednesday Join us in welcoming one of our newest 2024 SNAPP Working Groups: Monitoring Restoration Effectiveness! While billions are invested in global ecological restoration, most projects lack adequate long-term funding for monitoring efforts, often limited to two years. To maximize resources, we need standardized guidelines for proper monitoring to measure success. This working group, led by Missouri Botanical Garden, University of Minnesota, ETH Zürich, and TNC Colombia will leverage stakeholder networks and reviewing existing datasets, this group will assess if short-term data can predict long-term outcomes and how these vary by environmental conditions. Congratulations to the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative and its member organization on this exciting recognition! 🎉🎉🎉 SNAPP is proud to play a part in advancing this important work through our recently launched Resilient Rangelands working group!
📢 We’re a Finalist for The Earthshot Prize 2024! The Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative is delighted and humbled to announce that we have been selected from over 2,400 nominees as a Finalist in the 'Protect and Restore Nature' category of The Earthshot Prize. This nomination recognises the dedicated work of our team and partners in protecting and initiating the restoration of the unique steppe ecosystems of Kazakhstan for almost 20 years. From reviving endangered species like the Saiga antelope and Kertagy (Przewalski’s horse) to conserving vast landscapes of over 12 million acres that are critical for biodiversity, and building the knowledge and capacity of the current and next generation of conservationists, we are committed to securing a sustainable future for both people and wildlife and sharing knowledge with fellow teams working across comparable temperate grasslands around the world. Being part of The Earthshot Prize is a tremendous honour and a wonderful opportunity to elevate on a global stage the significant achievements in Kazakhstan to conserve steppe grasslands. We are truly excited to continue our journey in fulfilling our vision for thriving steppe ecosystems, with the generous mentorship of The Earthshot Global Alliance. Thank you to all our partners, supporters, and the communities with whom we have the pleasure to work, but without whom such global recognition would have never been achieved. https://lnkd.in/em2eXJ6J ACBK — Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan Fauna & Flora Frankfurt Zoological Society / Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt RSPB Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) American Prairie Rewilding Argentina Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Whitley Fund for Nature Global Rewilding Alliance CITES Saiga Conservation Alliance

#WorkingGroupWednesday Join us in welcoming one of our newest 2024 SNAPP Working Groups: Salmon, Forests and Fire! With wildfires increasing across western North America, preserving salmonids and promoting fire resilience amid climate change is vital for local communities, but thus far approaches to the management of both have lacked integration. This group, led by The Nature Conservancy in Washington, Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, University of Washington, and Colorado State University, will engage communities and a multi-organizational group of stakeholders to develop tools to integrate wildfire management with salmonid recovery.
