Hello all! As a new private practitioner in 2022 I went through many challenges but the most difficult one was not being able to set clear boundaries. I couldn't ask a client that the session is over even when they used to exceed half an hour over the slot time. I hoped for them to realise and stop talking(insert clown face) but obviously it never happened. Shortly, I understood that this has been creating a sense of resentment in me for the client and that is affecting my therapy work with them. I seeked help, discussed this with supervisor and fellow Psychologists and came to know about the importance of Client Consent Form. Today, I am launching a customisable template of a comprehensive consent form. It states issues like cancellation policy, length of a session and other important things that are necessary to put out there before beginning therapy sessions. I have curated this form to also help out budding practitioners who might be going through similar challenges. Self Space therapists are grounded, therapeutically agile and deeply compassionate. Human first, therapists second — they’re on a level with clients, not a pedestal. Each of them bring a wealth of lived experiences that inform their practice and allow them to support people from a place of knowing, not just from their training (although they have that too). As therapists, they have an incredibly privileged insight into the paradoxes of human nature. They make weekly journeys to the greatest depths of human trauma: death, infertility, infidelity and depression, as well as the seemingly smaller moments of pain: a crush we might have on another that goes unnoticed, or feelings of jealousy and resentment towards a close friend. They have acclimatised themselves to these things not just by reading books and studying, but by knowing their own nature and confronting the complicated, painful and embarrassing aspects of themselves that are collectively relegated into a murky puddle of shame within our culture. Because of this, you can share anything and everything with them - and they will meet it with curiosity, compassion and care.

As a therapist, it can be challenging to deal with clients who suddenly stop attending therapy sessions without any explanation. This behavior is commonly known as "ghosting" and can be emotionally taxing for both the therapist and the client. In such a situation, the therapist may face several questions, such as what could have caused the client to disappear, how to reach out to the client, or whether to continue therapy if the client returns. If you have any thoughts on how a therapist should handle such a situation, please feel free to share them.

Trauma-informed care is the umbrella term to ALL mindsets, policies and procedures, and therapy strategies where reducing harm & not causing trauma is the primary intention. In the speech world specifically, a lot of big SLPs are now talking about trauma-informed care as part of their niche, when actually, it is the overall umbrella. Within the neurodiversity affirming therapy movement, the goal is to avoid causing trauma to the individuals served when previously, the practicing we were teaching, such as masking and punishment for stimming, are proven to cause trauma and harm to the individual we were intending to “help”. If our offices and spaces are not accessible to disabled people, we are actively excluding them and actively causing harm. When I present on trauma-informed care, I often get asked why this isn’t the umbrella of nice-ness or compassion or empathy. Although those “raindrops” are part of the equation and important aspects, niceness does not ensure we are not causing harm. Under the umbrella, you will see terms that are mindsets or approaches to working with people. Ask yourselves “how do these practices ensure we are reducing OUR role in causing harm”?
