#MentalHealthAwarenessMonth is coming to an end, and I wanted to take some time to discuss the challenges and benefits of finding a therapist through the Young Minds Initiative this week. From affordability of mental health services to a professional’s cultural competency, many factors contribute to everyone’s idea of the “right” therapist. Additionally, there are various reasons why people seek therapy, and I want to remind you that whatever your reason is, it is just as valid as the next person’s. Whether you are seeking help for a disorder, trauma, or need guidance with job or school stress, therapy is for everyone. Can you tell people that you’re seeking therapy? Yes, why not? Don’t you take leaves for doctor’s appointment too? Breaking the stigma that surrounds therapy is important. As a counseling psychologist, I can confirm that therapy is nothing to be ashamed of. Just like you wouldn't keep feeling sick a secret, you shouldn't keep seeking help to yourself. By being upfront about your therapy appointments with your organisation or any other person, you're taking the first step towards healing. Don't let the fear of judgment keep you from taking care of your mind. Remember, your mind deserves healing too. 🌼 #mentalhealthawareness #therapyworks #breakthestigma

You know what upsets me the MOST? The amount of times I have heard how awful someone’s first experience with therapy was. It is actually heartbreaking to know that there are so many people out there that shy away from trying therapy based on those experiences. Whether it took place in childhood or as an adult, a person may not seek the support they need. This can result in a diminished quality of life, or for some, prove to be life threatening. For those that have been able to muster up enough courage to try again, you deserve a therapist that will listen, and understand your needs before attempting to support. Our slogan to listen, understand and support exists for this very purpose. Empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard are designed to be the bare minimum when it comes to therapeutic support. as a client, you DO have a say in the type of therapist you need and want to support you along this journey. Our Therapists Collective is back in action as a Peer Support Groups for Therapists. A place specially curated to share vulnerabilities as humans who are in a helping profession. Shared angst, incapacities, failures and above all the trauma we share listening to people’s lives that we can’t share anywhere. No one talks about this. No one talks abt feelings therapists go through. No one talks about what being in a therapy room listening to people’s lives does to a therapist. I’m excited and scared. I don’t wanna screw this up. I wanna curate experiences that enable support and empathetic sharing. I wish kindness, compassion and authenticity in our collective for all of us.❤️
