Juneteenth: Joy, remembrance, change 🎯 With #Juneteenth approaching, I am proud to be part of an organization that recognized Juneteenth as a paid holiday, even before it became a federal holiday, and even now, when many don't recognize it as an American holiday. I attended a webinar today that went over facts about Juneteenth. One of which was that you don't have to be black to celebrate Juneteenth.. because Juneteenth is American History. The panel dug into how, on July 4, 1776, black people were not free. So when we think about celebrating independence, we need to have both 4th of July and Juneteenth in tandem—and think about that pivotal moment when both the black community and those of European descent came together in this movement and fought against slavery. We still have a long way to go to continue making positive changes in marginalized communities, but it's a reminder of the positive impact of people coming together to make a change and be a part of the #change. ✊🏼 💡 Check out the following link for resources and guides on impactful ways to celebrate Juneteenth at work: https://lnkd.in/gkCUThBC

As we kick off Black History Month, it's essential to recognize and celebrate the profound influence of African Americans on the arts in the United States. This year's theme is particularly close to my heart as we dig into the rich layers of creativity, innovation, and resilience that have shaped the cultural landscape of this nation. Film and Television: From the groundbreaking work of directors like Spike Lee and Ava DuVernay to the unforgettable performances of actors such as Sidney Poitier and Viola Davis, African Americans have played pivotal roles in shaping the storytelling narrative on the big and small screens. Music: The rhythmic beats of jazz, the soulful sounds of gospel, and the revolutionary tunes of hip-hop—African American musicians have gifted the world with an unparalleled musical legacy. Icons like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, and Kendrick Lamar have left an indelible mark on the global music scene. Visual Arts: From the vibrant paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the thought-provoking sculptures of Kara Walker, African American artists have challenged norms and redefined the boundaries of visual expression, contributing immensely to the world of contemporary art. Literature: The literary contributions of authors like James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, and Ta-Nehisi Coates have not only reflected the African American experience but have also influenced the literary canon, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural diversity. This month, let's commit to amplifying the voices and stories of African Americans in the arts. What is the difference between discussing matters IN GOOD FAITH and not discussing matters in good faith? Can you feel the difference between discussing something with someone who prioritises respect and someone who doesn't? On what can we NEVER agree? Do I WANT to understand how communities ACTUALLY interact or do I speak for and over all of them? Can we sip a tea and chat about pressing issues? Can we sip a coffee and chat about awkward issues? Can we sip a wine and HEAL anything? What can we not help? How much difference does genuineness and sincerity make when discussing the outcomes of communication and meetings? Do you know Robert Downey Jr was raised by a beatnik film maker? Do you know Robert Downey Jr is the most famous beatnik in history? What unities would the beatnik cultures strive for? What was the tribal self-identifying among beatnik? I was treated like an Inner Mongolian beat when I played with an international Nanjing-founded Progressive Rock band in Mainland China alongside an Inner Mongolian singer. We were our own beatnik tribe. People looked at us as they did but we didn't care. We would defend each other TO EVERYONE. Very emphatically. Should THE WORLD tell all black communities and Robert Downey Jr how they should discuss race? Where can they all go to be themselves? I personally didn't represent all mixed race properties when I played Inner Mongolian beat music. Nor did I want to negatively represent them in any way. I have ZERO understanding of how these issues are discussed in different contexts in black communities in the US or anywhere. With the recent passing of an Australian TV icon from our pre-emiment televised variety show, our main public news service has been discussing blackfacing issues. Why do folk want to do it? What do our discussions around it reveal about us? What ways can we foresee to deescalate all future discussions with the world's many cultures? At what point can we admit that we are all tribal cultures? And that Scots, Irish and Jews themselves have incredibly fraught histories, and that every single people have been offended by wild things. No one is condoning anything out of hand. In my lifetime every time I've seen blackfacing I defer to the community whose face is painted on. And yet in my lifetime I've seen Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappelle have a lot of fun with their white face shtick. The politics and cultures around this in particular are supercharged in many communities. What can your community do to discuss these issues? What can your company do to discuss past issues with blackfacing, brownfacing, yellow facing, whitewashing and all associated issues? How should a photographer politely discuss to a black model how and why they conduct a white balance check test? How can we know what we think until we chat? HOW do Samuel and Quentin chat?

Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate freedom while also reflecting on the ongoing injustices and struggles the Black community continues to face. The United States recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday just THREE years ago. Although I am grateful to my company for recognizing the holiday and giving us the day off, I can’t help but feel uncomfortable knowing there are Black individuals working today who should be celebrating. Here are a few meaningful ways you can celebrate Juneteenth and support the Black community: 🤎Acknowledge Juneteenth and educate yourself on the holiday, why it’s celebrated, and the history behind it. 🤎Support a local Black-owned business. (Thank you Knuckle Sandwiches for lunch!) 🤎Follow a Black creator, artist, influencer, etc. 🤎Read a novel by a Black author. 🤎Stream music by a Black artist - (I can’t wait to see Megan Thee Stallion tonight!!) 🤎 Talk to a loved one about the importance of Juneteenth. Do they know the history? Do they know the importance of the holiday? 🤎Speak to a trusted leadership member at your company. Let them know you want your company to recognize Juneteenth and give everyone the day off. Juneteenth: Reflecting on Progress and Moving Forward On June 19th, we pause to honor a pivotal moment in our nation's history of racial justice.
