Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day—a time to consider how we can best protect the well-being of seniors in our communities, as well as the companion animals who bring them emotional comfort. Hundreds of thousands of seniors experience elder abuse—defined as the intentional infliction of pain, neglect, or financial exploitation of a vulnerable person over the age of 60—each year. Common signs of elder abuse include unexplained injuries, isolation, and sudden changes to a person’s financial situation. Elderly pet owners often have deep emotional ties to their animal companions, making them vulnerable to unscrupulous individuals seeking to exploit this bond. More than one-third of adult protection service caseworkers report their clients’ pets being threatened, injured, killed, or denied care. When responding to reports of abused and neglected animals, animal control officers may encounter situations involving elder abuse. Cross-training and cross-reporting among human services and animal protection agencies can help prevent and prosecute these interlocking forms of family violence. To learn more about how to recognize, prevent, and report elder abuse, consult the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life's website: https://lnkd.in/eDeTeyrP #WorldElderAbuseAwarenessDay #WEAAD2024

How would it feel if in your hardest moment, you couldn’t take all of your family with you? There is a well-established connection between animal abuse and intimate partner violence. Recognizing this link is crucial for understanding the opportunity for a comprehensive support system for survivors that includes provisions for pets. Nearly 50% of domestic violence survivors delay leaving a violent situation due to fear for their pet’s safety, and nearly 25% of survivors return due to fear for their pets. Harriet’s Haven for Pets at Tubman ensures the safety of all members of the family, whether they move on 2 legs or 4. You can help families stay together by making a gift to Harriet’s Haven and helping us reach our goal at https://lnkd.in/gs2t86Pf.

Title: Advocating for Road Safety: A Community's Responsibility Today I witnessed a distressing incident in our neighborhood that underscored the importance of road safety and accountability. A reckless driver caused a serious accident involving an innocent street dog, leaving the poor animal injured and abandoned. Thankfully a woman and her mother in our colony took the dog to the vet for the treatment. I took the initiative to provide shelter and care for the dog, ensuring its safety and well-being. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the repercussions of irresponsible behavior on the road. It's not just about following traffic rules; it's about recognizing our duty to protect all members of our community, including our furry friends. As professionals, we have a responsibility to advocate for road safety and hold accountable those who endanger lives through reckless actions. Let's use our platforms to raise awareness, promote responsible driving practices, and ensure justice for the victims of such incidents. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone, human and animal alike. #RoadSafety #CommunityResponsibility #AnimalWelfare #Accountability #Advocacy Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Let's spark meaningful conversations and drive positive change in our communities.

This #WorldSeniorCitizensDay, AWI recognizes the important role companion animals can play in improving older adults’ quality of life. Unfortunately, there is significant overlap between animal abuse and elder abuse, as the bond between seniors and their pets is sometimes exploited by abusers. Cross reporting of animal and elder abuse can lead to more effective interventions for people and pets. Recognizing and reporting red flags could help you protect seniors in your community. Visit: https://lnkd.in/e-XXp3gY to learn the signs. To help individuals who are experiencing abuse get themselves and their companion animals to safety, AWI established and maintains the Safe Havens for Pets directory. This comprehensive list can help senior citizens and their pets find a nearby safe haven: https://lnkd.in/efCApYCx 📷: Duytrg Truong

#TNR Back to Basics: To make humane trapping easier, feed community cats out of UNSET traps for one to two weeks prior to the trapping day. This will get the cats comfortable with seeing and walking into traps. Remove the traps after the cats eat so there are no risks of theft, damage, or trapping a cat accidentally! Happy #OlderAmericansMonth! Research shows that companion animals can reduce blood pressure, stress, health care costs, and risk of heart disease among seniors. They can also encourage social interaction and physical activity. Unfortunately, there is sometimes a dark side to the bond between older adults and their pets—the link between elder abuse and animal cruelty. As a means of exerting power, abusers may engage in mistreatment of an elder’s pets or threaten to do so. According to the National Sheriffs' Association, about 45% of surveyed adult protection services case workers reported witnessing intentional animal abuse or neglect when visiting clients. Interpersonal violence doesn’t discriminate based on age. Take action to protect elderly individuals and their pets from abuse and exploitation.
