Living with MS: Manca Buh & Gregor Selak's stories of strength and resilience 💪 Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be challenging, but Manca Buh and Gregor Selak have shown that it's possible to face these challenges with strength and purpose. 🌟 Manca was diagnosed with MS at just 15, a time when most young people are focused on the excitement of the future. She was afraid she might be in a wheelchair by her twenties, but Manca chose to accept her diagnosis and stay strong. Now, more than 20 years later, she enjoys her life by baking, gardening, and growing her own vegetables. Despite her father, brother, and sister also having MS, Manca stays positive and is thankful for the support of the Slovenian healthcare system for being a consistent support in her life. 🌿 Her story reminds us that MS doesn't have to take away the things we love - it can lead us to discover new ways to enjoy life. Gregor also struggled when he was diagnosed, but instead of letting MS hold him back, he chose to rediscover a passion that had always driven him: climbing. It wasn't easy at first - his legs trembled, and he faced many challenges - but he kept going. Now, he's not only climbing again but also competing in para climbing, with the goal of becoming a world champion. 🧗♂️ For him, MS wasn't the end but a fresh start. He believes everyone should find what they love and go after it, no matter the difficulties. Innovation News Network is pleased to be publishing an article for Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow's Health | Le partenariat canadien pour la santé de demain - the article will appear in Issue19 of The Innovation Platform published at the start of September. The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow’s Health (CanPath) is Canada’s largest population health study and has undertaken vital work over the past decade to understand how lifestyle, behaviour, genetics, and the environment interact and lead to disease. The national cohort brings together seven regional cohorts: BC Generations Project, Alberta's Tomorrow Project, Healthy Future Sask, Manitoba Tomorrow Project, Ontario Health Study, CARTaGENE (Quebec), and the Atlantic Partnership for Tomorrow’s Health, which, cumulatively, have enrolled over 330,000 Canadians ages 30 to 74. In addition to capturing health and lifestyle information, participants have contributed biological samples. Participants are followed over time to capture changes in their health outcomes. CanPath is hosted by the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto with national funding from the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) hosts CanPath data in a safe and secure environment. Sometimes life’s challenges show us that no matter how strong we are, we can’t face everything alone. After my spinal cord injury, I discovered the true power of “community”and it became essential to my healing. The people and foundations who step up to support those of us with spinal cord injuries are nothing short of life-changing. Whether it's foundations like Rally4Reilly and Friends, Spinal Network, Project 34, or rehabilitation centers like Reneu Health, Adapt Movement Center, Challenge Center, or local support groups, (and so many others🥹) they graciously provide the resources, hope, and strength we need to keep moving forward. September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, a time to recognize the incredible strength of those living with SCI and to highlight the importance of these support systems. For me, having a community of friends, family, and these amazing organizations has meant not having to carry the burden alone. They’ve shown me that even in the face of unimaginable challenges, we can find strength, purpose, and a sense of belonging. So, if you’re searching for hope or wondering how to make a difference, start by being a part of this community. 📸 This picture was taken during my first time live on stage in front of an international audience, talking about my personal story, losing four of my loved ones in a year talking vulnerably about grief, cancer and loss. I even cried on stage - which was an important moment for me to be vulnerable with my audience. It was the main purpose, my mission of why I was there on stage, sharing my personal story, just 5 months after my husband died. All of us have faced, or are facing many challenges. 🤝 It's a tough road but you need to DARE to be yourself, be vulnerable. Because what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. In all of my talks I want to encourage everyone to be their vulnerable selves. It might seem scary but what's worse? Wearing a mask that covers emotions that stops people to truly connect and be there for you. Throughout my grieving process, I had the support of industry friends, colleagues, friends and family who have helped me in my darkest moments 💗 When I look back at this moment at IBTM Events 2021 in Barcelona on stage with my colleague, I am proud. Speaking together with James Morgan PhD - EWD who had lost his brother to cancer 5 weeks before this talk, sharing our challenges, and emotions was pure, authentic and honest. Today, we commemorate World Hemophilia Day, a day that brings into focus the unique challenges faced by those living with Hemophilia. Imagine concluding a long day at work, seeking solace in the comfort of your bed, only to realize that even the softest fall could trigger internal bleeding, causing pain and suffering. This is the reality for our brothers and sisters living with Hemophilia. Hemophilia is a rare, yet significant, medical condition caused by genetic anomalies. It is characterized by the blood’s inability to clot due to a deficiency in a crucial element known as the “Factor”. Females are typically the carriers of this condition. To manage this condition, Hematologists administer external infusions of appropriate doses to maintain sustainable blood flow through the joints. The treatment regimen includes empowering patients through self-infusion training, maintaining a lean and fit body weight through strategic training, and regular diagnostics to monitor the blood’s response to prescribed medications. In this ecosystem, the patient is the primary participant. Having worked for this cause for two straight years, I am continually amazed by the resilience of these warriors. Despite their condition, they lead fulfilling lives, excelling as drivers, fitness enthusiasts, and above all, as ordinary individuals. Encouraging them to adapt to a customized lifestyle has been an overwhelming experience for me, especially as someone who is not particularly fitness-oriented. However, it is crucial to “speak”, “accept”, “educate”, and empower everyone involved in this ecosystem, including stakeholders, caregivers, and beneficiaries. It is high time we recognize and normalize this condition, celebrating these patients for their daily victories over Hemophilia. In a world that moves at breakneck speed, Hemophilia warriors are making their mark, much like Roger Bannister, one of the greatest Marathon runners. We can always stand by them, cheering them on, and perhaps even sparking a bit of adrenaline to help them live their best lives. Here’s to the best of World Hemophilia Day to all!
