Calling all veterans, serving members of the armed forces and their partners. Take a minute and consider your partner, and your family. Maybe you have children. Do you know what will happen to them if anything happens to you? Where will they live? What will happen to the schooling and education for your kids? What community will wrap around them and support them when they need it most? Will it be the community they are part of now? Sadly there is little information on the outcomes for the bereaved partners and children of Service families. Even less than the information on the Armed Forces. If you don't track it; you don't know if there's an issue; you don't have to do anything about it. Or am I being too cynical? In this week's podcast, we are talking with Jilly Carrell, "The Accidental Activist for Bereaved Military Community". Thank you for trusting us to share your experience and for all you're doing to change this. The support when there is a death in military service should reflect the service, commitment and oath of allegiance. You would think that ✅ Your family would be assigned someone to help with welfare and emotional support. ✅ There would be a joined-up after-service support ✅ Easy access to things such as dentists, doctors and schooling. For veterans, there is Op Courage, Fortitude, Nova and Prosper. Where do bereaved partners and children sit in terms of how they are supported and their needs tracked and met? Are they part of the Veteran Community? Seems not. They fall into no man's land. Not quite civilian, not quite Armed Services or Veteran. Isn't it about time the Office of Veterans Affairs looked at having an Op Families for the joined-up wrap-around service support? This country has been at war, peacekeeping on major exercises for the past 80 years. Things have to improve. The families serve just as much as the service person. Last week, Cameron Cushman asked his LinkedIn network if The American Legion is dying. The post generated great conversation, but it made me realize, in order to answer the question, you must first establish what TAL would look like, were it to be “alive.” In today’s society, traditional VSO’s should be focused on two things: supporting the posts and lobbying for veterans & #military. POST SUPPORT: When I consider who does welfare checks on shut-ins during the winter months, who delivers food to the homeless, who drags their buddies out on a fishing trip when they need it most, who invites Marines into their homes on the holidays, who spends their weekends cleaning litter off the streets, who sends care packages to deployed service members, who betters every aspect of our communities? The answer is always the same: it’s the posts. Those broken down buildings that house 5 - 5,000 members are where the magic happens. Sure, they may never get the recognition they deserve, but those are the folks that are actively bettering this country. Every dollar and resource should be spent with those posts in mind. Do they need building repairs? Do they need marketing or PR support? If the posts are serving the community, the national organization should be seeking out every possible opportunity to amplify and support their work. LOBBYING: I think there’s like 40,000+ #veteran non-profits in America, but the fact of the matter is there’s only a handful that have the institutional credibility and experience to lobby successfully on behalf of veterans. Traditional VSO’s should be actively recruiting the top veteran advocates - not simply hiring someone because they served 20 years in the military. Their offices should be full of policy wonks and expert lobbyists. Staff should be paid wages commensurate with their performance and underperforming staff, be them intern or director, should be fired - anything less is a disservice to the 19 million #veterans they are paid to represent. They should lobby, ruthlessly, for the wishes of their membership. If at any point they are incapable of setting aside their personal beliefs in order to fight for the will of the body, they should quit or be they should be removed. They represent the veteran membership and should be accountable to the veteran membership. If a traditional VSO is actively supporting its posts and lobbying effectively on behalf of the members it represents, it is alive and well. In honor of "Military Child Appreciation Month", I had planned to share resources and services throughout the month in support of this special population. First up, TRIO-Veterans Student Support Services, Pensacola State College. Did you know that Trio offers special supportive services for first generation college students, low-income families, and for those with disabilities? I know these aren't specific to military children BUT many parents are so concerned about splitting up their GI Bill, they don't consider other education options. ✅ Some service members never receive their degree, making military children potentially the first in their family. ✅ For some agencies, military income doesn't always count towards income, won't count food/housing, resulting in meeting a "low income" status. ✅ Military children aren't exempt from disabilities and may qualify for the services if they need special accommodations. We need to expand access to affordable housing, enhance mental healthcare services tailored to their unique experiences, and create robust employment initiatives that capitalize on their invaluable skills. These essential measures will empower our veterans to enjoy a fulfilling and prosperous life alongside every San Franciscan. Let’s not allow our gratitude to remain a seasonal sentiment; instead, let it evolve into an enduring commitment that strengthens our entire community. By investing in and supporting our military families, we cultivate an atmosphere of appreciation and inclusion, reinforcing the very values that define San Francisco.
