“People with lived experience are waking up to realise… we have agency and power to change things, to confront the system” – Conference participant. In April of this year, Migration Exchange co-organised the Reclaiming Lived Experience Leadership conference with Freedom from Torture, Refugee Action and Refugee Council. It was a day full of amazing insights from people that work in and fund the UK refugee and migration sector. To capture and share the learnings and key insights from the day, we have put together a report. In this event we explored three key areas: defining lived experience leadership, identifying and dismantling barriers to power, and enhancing career opportunities. 💡 If you are interested in hearing more about these discussion, visit our website to download the report: https://bit.ly/4czNQ9O

The Rohingya Green Nature Society (RGNS) is dedicated to empowering the youth of the Rohingya refugee camps by providing essential leadership training. This initiative, in collaboration with CEHRDF, focuses on equipping young individuals with the skills and confidence necessary to become effective advocates for their community. In an environment where opportunities are limited, RGNS believes that fostering leadership qualities among youth is crucial for driving positive change. By nurturing their potential, we aim to create a new generation of leaders who can stand up for their rights and actively contribute to improving their community's living conditions. Leadership training organized by RGNS also emphasizes the importance of community engagement and collaboration. Participants learn not only about individual leadership but also about the power of working together to address shared challenges. Through workshops and interactive sessions, they develop vital skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This collective approach builds a sense of solidarity among participants, reinforcing the idea that true leadership involves uplifting others and fostering a united front against adversity. By instilling these values, RGNS aims to create a culture of resilience that will benefit the entire Rohingya community. As RGNS continues its commitment to leadership development, it opens up pathways to dignity and hope for the Rohingya youth. The training programs not only empower individuals but also inspire a vision for a sustainable future within the camps. By equipping these young leaders with the tools to advocate for their rights, we are taking significant strides towards self-determination and social justice. The time to act is now, as we collectively invest in the potential of the next generation, ensuring that their voices are heard and their aspirations are realized. Through RGNS, we believe that the Rohingya community can rise above challenges and work towards a brighter, more sustainable future. #YouthForTheEnvironment #SustainableRohingyaFutur #EnvironmentalLeadership #RGNSInitiative #GreenFuture #Sustainability #ClimateAction #GreenThumb #NurtureNature #FutureGenerations #rohingya_green_nature_society #RGNS #leadershipdevelopment #LeadershipTraining

For it to remain relevant, the Global #RefugeeForum needs to rethink its structure and culture to respect and value refugee leadership, participation, and representation. It also needs to encourage and cultivate more honest and critical conversations that go beyond pledges and platitudes. Read our reflection on the 2023 #GRF 🔗https://ow.ly/5N7j50QHM5R #RefugeesLead

📈 In an increasingly intricate humanitarian system, one thing does not change: local organisations are the first on the scene and the last to leave. 🌍 We have seen this recently in Eastern Europe, where the sudden invasion of #Ukraine in February 2022 forced local organisations into rapid response and relief efforts, which are still ongoing. ⚠ Numerous non-standard, emerging #humanitarian actors, including civil society, found themselves initially unsupported. ⏩ And yet this also created an opportunity – to turn #localisation from theory into practice, addressing new audiences and fostering stronger local networks. ❓ What worked? What didn’t? What have we learnt for localisation in this and other contexts? 📆 Join Humanitarian Leadership Academy and Sphere at #hnpw2024 to find out. ☑ Register here: https://bit.ly/hnpw-2

The Cultural Connections program is a 5 day cultural leadership camp for young people who finish Community SOS (Central Coast)' 10 week LIFE Skills program. Young people learn cultural history, connection to land and country and traditional practices such as making artefacts, dance, art, weaving, jewellery making, and spend quality time with Aboriginal Elders who pass on life experiences through storytelling. "We have learnt that there is a hunger and a need for young people to be taught authentic Aboriginal culture. This has been expressed by both participants and support teachers. We have experienced that the raw and natural connection to land for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth has a significant positive impact on their identity, understanding and connection to Country," says Vivian Muraahi, CEO of Community SOS (Central Coast). Skills learnt during the program has increased positive self-identity and has boosted young people's self-esteem and retention in schooling and level of employability. Many young people on the NSW Central Coast have limited opportunities to engage in cultural programs to help develop their understanding and respect of Aboriginal peoples and culture. "Teachers have said that they don't understand why true authentic Aboriginal culture isn't being taught in schools." It is important that young Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people learn about the history and contributions of Aboriginal culture now, more than ever. #NRW2024

"And ONE MORE thing..." We need to consider how our engagements are reciprocal to young Indigenous people. Reciprocity is typically in the form of honorariums and food, which is awesome, don't get me wrong. But the next step is continued learning and commitments beyond the scope of one project. Reciprocity to Frayed Feathers means finding creative ways to continue empowering young Indigenous people beyond serving them directly. It's kind of like a commitment to a personal cultural shift in one's life to find ways to be reciprocal to Indigenous youth. In my opinion, it's a core component of youth reconciliation in Canada. At the end of the day, if that sounds complicated, then start by asking the youth in your community what reciprocity means to them and start there. Reconciliation is complicated, but we take small practical steps to get there. What does reciprocity mean to your community's young Indigenous people? #FrayedFeathers #IndigenousYouth #YouthReconciliation #YouthConsultation #Leadership #YouthEngagement

Title🇬🇭: "If We Agree- A Call To Action" -AA Sharif. If we agree that Africa's vast potential remains unrealized and that our political leadership has yet to fully deliver the leadership needed for lasting progress; If we agree that development cannot be left solely in the hands of those in power; If we agree that Africa can only rise by taking control of her own destiny, by uniting to build from within and crafting her own narrative; If we agree that no great nation has ever been built by outsiders, and that sustainable development must be an effort born from within; If we agree that education is the surest path to realizing our ambitions; If we agree that education is what can truly transform our condition; Then let us commit wholeheartedly to making education accessible to all. Let every effort be made, without hesitation, to uplift our people through the power of knowledge. #SDGs #TheAfricaWeWant
