India: The Aspirational Market
India is one of the most aspirational markets in the world, where owning the latest iPhone or luxury brand has become a symbol of status and 70% of the iPhone sold in india are on EMI.
A few years ago, Apple’s India revenue was largely driven by Tier 1 cities like Delhi, Bombay, and Bangalore.
Now, 60% of Apple’s revenue comes from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities such as Indore, Jodhpur, and Vijayawada.
And it's not just Apple—other luxury brands like Gucci, Balenciaga, and Louis Vuitton see the same trend.
Interestingly, it’s the middle class, not the ultra-rich, who are driving these sales. These consumers aspire to look wealthy, even if they’re not necessarily 'rich.'
This shift shows that anyone who can bridge the gap between aspiration and affordability is set to succeed. In today’s world, it’s much easier to *look* rich than to *be* rich.
