Alexander M. Markov, MD; Sina Jasim, MD, MPH; and Jennifer Powers Carson, PhD, from WashU Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Lipid Research had their article titled “A Puzzling Case of Elevated Parathyroid Hormone,” published by The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine. The authors reviewed a case of a 45-year-old woman who presented to surgical oncology for hyperparathyroidism management. With a history of thyroid nodules, the patient had obtained an ultrasound that displayed two solid lesions that were inferior to the right lobe, which raised the concern for parathyroid adenomas or reactive lymph nodes. https://lnkd.in/g3gFs5Y6 Article title: The Value of Positron Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography Imaging in the Restaging of Differentiated Thyroid Cancers and Evaluation of its Association with Thyroglobulin Levels Author(s): Rana Kaya Doner; Sait Sager; Fatma Arzu Gortan; Ozge Vural Topuz; Resit Akyel; Cihan Gündogan; Gamze Tatar; Serkan Teksoz; Kerim Sonmezoglu Journal: International Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Journal ISSN: 2640-7582 Abstract Purpose: Recently, there have been an increasing number of studies indicating that Florine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is a sensitive method in the evaluation of thyroid cancer. This retrospective study aims to assess the value of FDG PET/CT in the evaluation of thyroid cancer and determine the association between serum thyroglobulin (Tg) levels and FDG PET/CT. Methods: We reviewed FDG PET/CT images of 104 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) (28 men, 76 women) whose: (1) iodine-131 (131I) whole-body scanning (WBS) was negative but had elevated Tg levels or (2) Tg level was low, but showed abnormal findings using various imaging methods. #ThyroidCancer #Thyroglobulin #I131Scintigraphy #FDGPETCT #EndocrineGlands #Hormones #HormoneMetabolism #StructureAndPhysiochemicalProperties #HormonalReceptors #SignalingMechanisms #HormoneRegulatedGeneExpression #IntracellularSteroidAndLipidMetabolism #BoneAndMineralMetabolism #Infertility #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SexualDifferentiation #Puberty #PediatricEndocrinology #EndocrinePharmacology #MolecularEndocrinology #GastrointestinalEndocrinology #Neuroendocrinology #ComparativeEndocrinology #CardiovascularEndocrinology #ReproductiveEndocrinology

✨ First-Author News! ✨ I’m thrilled to share the publication of my first first-author paper, based on some of my master's thesis work! The study, titled "Dissociation between the anti-allodynic effects of fingolimod (FTY720) and desensitization of S1P1 receptor-mediated G-protein activation in a mouse model of sciatic nerve injury," explores important mechanisms of pain modulation and receptor signaling following sciatic nerve injury. This has been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for the support of my mentors, collaborators, and co-first author who made this possible. Looking forward to getting the next publication from my masters work out soon! Uncovering #biomarkers for acute ischemic #stroke (AIS) may hold the key to unlocking what causes harmful blood clots in the brain. For AIS, biomarkers such as brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-Terminal-proBNP are significant as these proteins are usually higher in those with heart problems. Recent research looked at these biomarkers from two types of AIS patients: those with #cardioembolic strokes and those with large artery #atherosclerosis strokes. The study aimed to identify where and how these proteins were located in the clots to understand their role in clot formation. In the study, pancreatic cancer tissue purchased from BioIVT was used as positive control tissue for BNP and NT-proBNP expression. Overall, their findings showed a strong positive correlation between BNP and NT-proBNP levels. BNP was found all over the clot, especially in areas rich in platelets while NT-proBNP was mostly found with certain types of white blood cells, suggesting it might be involved in the inflammation process related to clotting. 📖 Read the full study: https://hubs.ly/Q02Hr0vQ0 🧫 Explore available #biospecimens for #oncology, #neuroscience and more: https://hubs.ly/Q02Hrmpq0

[ #aging #brain #metformin #primate ] In this week's issue of Cell, Chinese researchers describe their investigations on the effect of Metformin on primates (40-month study). Parameters were followed using pan-tissue transcriptomics, DNA methylomics, plasma proteomics, and metabolomics. 🧠 The authors conclude that their "research pioneers the systemic reduction of multi-dimensional biological age in primates through metformin, paving the way for advancing pharmaceutical strategies against human aging". Summary: 👉 Metformin prevents brain atrophy, elevating cognitive function in aged male primates 👉 Metformin slows the pace of aging across diverse male primate tissues 👉 Metformin counterparts neuronal aging, delivering geroprotection via Nrf2 in male primates Reminder: Metformin is an FDA-approved antidiabetic agent that is used to: 👉 Manage high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes ( #T2D ) patients. 👉 Reduce #glucose absorption from the #intestines. 👉 Lower #liver glucose production. 👉 Improve #insulin sensitivity. #senescence #clock https://lnkd.in/dCRdY3JM?

Silo CEO Eric Weisblum shares insight on the company’s latest preclinical small animal study, “We are excited to launch this new study of our novel CNS homing peptide under the management of WuXi AppTec, one of the largest CROs in #Asia and globally. Designed to cross the blood-brain barrier and target damaged tissue and inflammation, SPU-16 has been shown to enhance the therapeutic effect of current and future therapeutics while decreasing the toxicity of the drugs. While we are currently investigating the #peptide for MS, it could provide similar benefits for multiple neuroinflammatory pathologies.” Read the press release here: https://bit.ly/3YEdSVB #ClinicalStudy #MultipleSclerosis #MSresearch #Neurology #Healthcare
