“Working in aging is the place to be. Studying the factors that affect the quality of aging and its impact on society is incredibly important. It is at the forefront of research in medicine, and it is top of mind for a lot of people — from the general public, to politicians, to economists, and others. It is good to be an expert on something that everybody recognizes as important.” — Luigi Ferrucci, M.D., Ph.D., Scientific Director of NIA Do you want to further your career in aging research? Dear all connections Let me share with you all an achievement related to one of our published article. Our paper titled “A study of knowledge, attitude & practice towards contraception among married women of reproductive age group having ≤ 2 children residing in Vasna ward, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India” is a very good article related to contraceptive practices carried out by one of my postgraduate student Dr Mansi Brahmbhatt. The article has recently crossed a milestone of 1000 reads on the ResearchGate platform. I am happy to share this academic achievement by our article and I share this joy with my coauthor and postgraduate student Dr mansi brahmbhatt This article was published in 'healthline' journal, which is published by the Gujarat Chapter of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM-GC) and is an official publication of the IAPSM. The article was published around a decade back in Volume 4 Issue 2 (July-December 2013) of the journal. The article addresses very basic component of knowledge, attitude and practice related to an important reproductive practice i.e. contraception. The beauty of the article lies in excellent data collection and detailed data analysis to bring out important facts related to the KAP. It has already been cited by many other authors (19 citations as per ResearchGate and 14 as per Google scholar, as of now). My team is running an online recruitment week for those considering Master’s programmes starting in September 2024 or 2025. The sessions give people a chance to explore our programmes in more depth and, hopefully, join us at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the future. Looking through the event schedule, I asked, "Who will deliver the Tropical Disease Biology session since James is on fieldwork in Malawi?" The answer was, "James will." Curious, I asked, "How will he manage that while he's in the field?" The response was, "Using his phone..." This sparked mild anxiety—what if the connection fails? How will he deliver the agreed format using his phone? But, it turns out I had nothing to worry about. What we got was an incredibly authentic introduction to the course, showcasing a true (and very cool) student experience. Lessons learned: 1. Chill-out. 2. Content can be too curated; there's value in letting it shine through with a more authentic touch. 3. Our MSc in Tropical Disease Biology sounds brilliant. 4. Technology can be very cool. CAN WE PROLONG THE SURVIVAL OF THE HUMAN SPECIES? CALLING FOR SUGGESTIONS -We are reaching the age of safe caesarean sections and effective pharmacological substitutes for natural birth hormones. How long do you think that our species can survive without the hormones of love that are now redundant in the critical period surrounding birth? Let us consider that: -Today, most human beings are not born among a great diversity of familiar and friendly microorganisms. The programming of their immune system, and therefore their health, is at stake. -Today reproductive medicine is neutralising the laws of natural selection… a turning point in the history of life. Are we in the age of sorcerer’s apprentices? If you think we should try to prolong the survival of the human species, please share your suggestions. Dr Michel Odent Author of “Can humanity survive socialised birth?”
