This video I created captures the essence of Kakheti, the heart of Georgian winemaking. 🍇🍷 The Republic of Georgia, nestled in the Caucasus, holds a rich history as the birthplace of wine. It's a region where vines have intertwined with the land for millennia, and the grape harvest is a communal celebration. In bustling Tbilisi, everyone seems to have relatives in the countryside. When harvest season arrives, families and friends converge on the vineyards. The grape harvest isn't just about yield; it's about connection. Children go and help their relatives with the harvest, not with an expectation of compensation, but a good hardy meal. Upon completion of the day's work, they all gather to enjoy a grand feast with friends and family. A table laden with local delicacies and, of course, wine. 🍽️🍷 Georgian wine embodies the very essence of its terroir—the soil, climate, and spirit of the land. The wine is made in a traditional clay amphora, the kvevri, which doesn't allow the vessel to impart a significant flavor on the wine. Instead, you are generally greeted by heavy tannins and a unmistakably pure expression of the fruit itself. This is largely due to the fermentation process where the skins and stems are left on to ferment, leading to white wine grapes creating an 'amber' skin contact wine. Although there are some wineries now making wines in the European style of using oak barrels, the kvevri lives on as a testament to their tradition. Just as the kvevri is a pure expression of the fruit and terroir, Georgian culture with its ties to the land is a refreshing change in perspective and showcases a different culture. One that like its wine, is reflective of its land of origin. Cirò Tenuta Iuzzolini 2021: The colour is medium ruby. On the nose tea and sour cherries. In the mouth light but smooth. The aftertaste is short. This wine is made mainly with Gaglioppo grapes, under the denomination Cirò DOC of Calabria. The origins of Gaglioppo are unclear. The traditional theory is that the variety arrived with Aglianico at the time of the ancient Greeks occupation of southern Italy (Magna Grecia). However, recent DNA testing suggests that it is more likely to be one of the many descendents of Sangiovese. A third theory is that both are true and that Gaglioppo is the result of a cross-pollination between Sangiovese and an unknown variety from Greece. Gaglioppo grapes must constitute at least 80% of the blend of a red Cirò DOC wine. The remaining 20% can be any other authorized red grape. Of this, only 10% may be Barbera, Sangiovese, Cabernets Franc or Sauvignon, and/or Merlot. Previously small amounts of white varieties such as Greco Bianco and Trebbiano Toscano were also allowed. For this bottle I paid 5 EUR at the winery, when I visited Calabria during my Eastern Holidays.

This past weekend was National Rose Day, here are 5 tips for enjoying ours! 1. Rosé wine is best enjoyed at a temperature between 44 and 55°F (7 and 12°C), which is a bit warmer than the ideal temperature for white wine. 2. Placing Rosés in the fridge overnight can extend their freshness and keep them looking vibrant. 3. Once opened, a bottle of Rosé wine can stay fresh for two to five days in the fridge if it is resealed with the original cork or screw cap. 4. The ideal glasses for serving rosé are tulip-shaped or stemless. 5. Rosé is versatile and pairs nicely with a variety of foods, such as barbecue meats, grilled chicken or fish, roasts, and vegetables. https://lnkd.in/gdgYhsfU

Sicilian organic brut made of Nerello Mascalese was popped yesterday as week starter. The winery is located in Presa which is on the East slopes of Etna, facing the Mediterranean sea and Taormina on the left view site. 🍇 Winery: Antichi Vini di Sicilia 🥂 Wine: Modum brut IGP 2021 Metodo Classico Aromas of lime, red apple, pineapple, grass, stone, basil, salt, biscuit. (Palate is individual!) Medium body, medium+ acidity, medium+ finish, persistant perlage. Traditional fermentation with up to five days maceration.
