With everything else going on I managed to squeeze in a quick talk to the National Academy of Sciences Engineering and medicine with my @lastprisonerproject family Stephanie Shepard , Donte West and Kyle Page. Our panel came directly after the “How to eliminate the black market.” Presentation which was making my skin crawl so we had to set the record straight that the more effective way to help the unlicensed operators transition to the regulated market is to refer to them, to US, as the “Existing community infrastructure.” When you discuss how to “Eliminate” a population it heavily influences your policy outcomes. When you discuss how to incorporate an historically exploited community into a new paradigm, that also heavily influences policy outcomes. Words matter A LOT. They’re how we paint the vision of the world we are co-creating before the brush hits the canvass. Be deliberate, and paint 🎨 something beautiful. https://lnkd.in/ekv8spfm

Advancing Ethical Standards in Kidney Care – Uniting Voices for Transparency, Patient-Centered Policies, and Accountability in Renal Health | Championing Ethical Reform in Dialysis Care
The Women's Edge It’s a disappointment that, in partnership with Boston Globe Media, chose to honor Fresenius Medical Care and CEO Helen Giza as a top women-led business. This award doesn’t reflect leadership in healthcare—it rewards a company known for keeping patients on #dialysis rather than investing in preventive care. For years, #FMC has chosen a profit-driven model over meaningful change, leaving patients tethered to dialysis machines instead of advancing treatments that could improve outcomes and quality of life. Under Helen Giza’s leadership, FMC has made no meaningful shift to address patient and family concerns. True leadership in healthcare requires transparency, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to patients, yet Giza has not publicly addressed the issues that those under FMC’s care continuously raise. These concerns—about care quality, lack of alternatives, and FMC’s failure to innovate—remain ignored. This silence is more than poor communication; it reveals a fundamental disconnect with the needs of those who rely on FMC’s services. Patients and families deserve a healthcare provider who prioritizes patient-centered reform, not just profits. FMC’s lack of social and corporate responsibility is shameful. The company’s profit model relies on maintaining the status quo, focusing on dialysis dependency rather than exploring preventive or alternative treatments. This approach exploits vulnerable patients who have few options. An ethical healthcare provider would be dedicated to improving care, yet FMC’s refusal to prioritize innovation keeps patients captive in a cycle that directly benefits the company’s bottom line. The Women’s Edge and Boston Globe Media’s recognition of FMC ignores these realities, giving a superficial endorsement to a company more focused on financial success than patient welfare. Awards like these should consider the actual impact on patients, not just revenue or superficial “achievements.” Patients and families affected by these corporate decisions should have a say, as they live with the consequences of FMC’s choices every day. If awards for healthcare leadership are to mean anything, they must honor a true commitment to patient care, ethical responsibility, and meaningful improvement. Recognizing Giza and FMC without examining their failure to innovate for better patient outcomes doesn’t just miss the mark—it undermines the very standards of excellence that healthcare leaders should uphold. Let’s demand awards that reflect real dedication to patient-first progress, setting a standard that prioritizes health over profit.
