It's crucial to justify why you need someone and what they will add to your organization before making the offer. It's not just about hiring, but about making quality hires! 🎁

"Why haven't they hired someone already?!?" I probably said it as much as I was asked the question early in my career and following recent roles and development, I have a different appreciation for understanding the immense pressure and risk. Hire slow. Fire fast. Be humble. Maintain your integrity. Insulate your organization with like-minded individuals who want to grow and have vision. Develop those that can be salvaged and recognize when an attitude is adverse to positive culture. Understand the needs of your team and make decisions that are the best for the sustainability of that team and your organization. Then...maybe...sleep. But first, pray for wisdom and guidance.

I've spent all week in interviews for a new position we are adding to our team and something struck me that I felt I should share. Oftentimes, as leaders and hiring managers, we set out to find the *ideal* candidate who ticks all the boxes. Experience? ✅ Availability? ✅ Relevant skills? ✅ Accepts the offered wage? ✅ We then often hire the most qualified candidate for the position and find ourselves struggling with other things within our organization. Important things like: Culture Team Fit Feedback Then we are left to wonder what went wrong. We hired the best candidate on paper, so why is our team struggling to accomplish our goals? The answer lies smack in the middle of our problem. By hiring someone simply because they tick all the boxes and know how to answer the questions, we aren't looking at the overall image of our internal structure and how this person will fit into that image. Many HR professionals and consultants say work culture starts from the top, and while yes, as managers and leaders it is our responsibility to set the example and be the model for what we want our employees to achieve, culture is also cultivated from the ground up. By hiring individuals who can seamlessly integrate into a functioning team, who understand your values as an organization, they will only add to the growing positive work environment. Think of your organization as a garden. Plants need a good balance of temperature, sunlight and tending to grow to their optimal size. We, as managers, are the gardeners. We protect the plants, water them and give them access to sunlight. Our employees are the soil in which those plants grow. Healthy soil reaps good harvest. It's up to the gardener to select the right soil mix for their garden. So, I encourage you to look beyond the boxes you tick when hiring someone and see what good they might add to the soil of your organization. How might they help your garden grow? 🌱
