Board Bundles and Bedside realities - At CHS, like other NHS Boards, our bundle of Board papers is always bulky and covers a range of challenges that our management teams, staff and patients face. How do you align this 'helicopter view' with the realities on the ground? We at Croydon have a great programme of Board leadership visits. I had one such visit to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) last week. The unit recently adopted a new SOP after a Norovirus-forced ward closure. The result – significant improvements to discharge and length of stay metrics and patient flows! Some key takeaways from a truly inspiring visit: 1. Leadership takes a myriad of forms and style - I met two great leaders on my visit - Dr Sajid Chaudhry – the Clinical Lead & Nikki Canapi - the AMU Matron. Their passion for continuous improvement and commitment to their teams and patients shone right through – daily challenges notwithstanding 2. Of all the types of change out there, effective change is the best – Yes, it is as obvious as it sounds because it is results driven and evidence-based 3. Don't wait for a 'good time' to start doing the right thing – severe adverse events can also be the 'best time' to start!
