What does it mean to be a “sustainable photographer”? Sustainability covers so many things, but the definition we think sums it up the best is: “Contributing to long-term wellbeing for all people and the planet” Sustainability isn’t just carbon footprints, environmental protection and green living, although of course it’s a big part of it. But it also covers issues such as social justice, inequality, and discrimination. At PPP, we see being a sustainable photographer as being environmentally and socially conscious and understanding the direct and indirect impacts of the work that we do. You've probably heard the term footprint, but have you heard about brainprints? While your footprint encompasses your physical impacts, such as emissions, waste, and pollution, your brainprint influences how people think, act, and feel. Why is this important when striving to be a sustainable photographer? What our images portray, and how we talk about them, can have an impact on people. They can influence behaviors. They can influence aspirations and values. We might reinforce a stereotype, promote a narrative that doesn't support equality, or glorify wasteful behavior (I'm looking at you wedding & fashion industries). Deconstructing the messages behind what you're presenting to the world as a photographer is an important step in working towards a more equitable future that promotes long-term wellbeing for all people and the planet.
