I appreciate this piece elevating the multi-faceted work that #CommunitySchools do and the multiple sources of support that keep them going. Specifically, I appreciate this description of what community schools do—"a community school engages the entire school and its community in providing students the targeted support and resources they need to succeed in the classroom: from helping families navigate access to health care, mental health services, food, and the internet, to providing workforce training, literacy development, tutoring, and safe after-school programming." And, I appreciate how this piece highlights the interplay of nonprofit, federal, and state funding that has helped more students benefit from this evidence-based approach to education—including the federal Full-Service Community Schools grants.

Support charter schools. This article highlights the strides we are making in NJ to provide educational opportunities to undeserved, economically disadvantaged kids in NJ's cities. College Achieve Public Schools (CAPS), a nonprofit, public charter school network operates in Paterson, Plainfield and Asbury Park, NJ and is recognized in the article. I want to point out that these positive statistics are based on 2019 data. Since then, CAPS schools have demonstrated the highest growth rate in academic performance in the state as measured by NJSLA testing results. The data ate getting better! https://lnkd.in/esBa3FQW

It's the season for college-bound students to apply for funding through the Free Application for Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA. Tulsa Higher Education Consortium and ImpactTulsa brought together counselors from Tulsa-area high schools, universities, and nonprofits representing more than 28,000 FAFSA-eligible students. Discussions focused on updates to FAFSA and ways to support students and families. Research shows that high school seniors who complete the FAFSA are 84% more likely to immediately enroll to continue their education after graduation. This is an example of "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." It doesn't matter if these schools embrace their inner-Power Rangers and merge into a larger school. Simply put, the number students interested in higher ed is rapidly decreasing and that isn't changing. The responsible course of action is to accept that an institution is closing and to handle this responsibly. Opinion pieces such as this one is just a pipe dream. ----- "How do we prevent some of these important institutions from disappearing over the next decade? My proposal is that clusters of three to five colleges join forces as part of one organization under an integrated supporting-company structure. A nonprofit supporting company would become the sole member (think of it as tantamount to a sole shareholder) of each participating institution. The colleges partnered in this supporting company structure would each retain their names, identities, accreditation, audited financial statements, assets and liabilities, and fiduciary boards of trustees.
