Every day, our interns experience the power of the ITW Business Model through real-world, on-the-job assignments. Axel Freund, an industrial management technology student at Northern Illinois University and a Safety intern at ITW Shakeproof knows this first-hand. Through his internship, Axel has been able to learn more about what makes ITW successful while gaining valuable experiences to ignite his career journey. Q: Why did you choose to intern at ITW? A: I thought the huge scope of ITW’s operations would act as an excellent catalyst for learning about general industry, business operations, and my role. Further, throughout the interview process, the folks I spoke with represented the company extremely well and showed it was a friendly place to work, which is important to me. Q: What has been your most enjoyable intern experience this summer? A: I loved working with United Way in Chicago during ITW’s Day of Action. Not only was it a great way to spend a day, but it helped me meet other professionals in the company and build my network. Q: What has been one of your biggest takeaways from your internship so far? A: There is so much to learn, and the sky is the limit. I am really getting a grasp on the scale of business and all the interworking parts in a way that previously was not on my radar. I am getting a good idea of what avenues I can take through my career to get where I want to go. #ProudToBeITW

It's about that time: end-of-internship recap post :) But this one's a special one! This summer was my last undergraduate internship, and I felt obliged to yap a little more on this post. Before that though, I'd like to thank Northrop Grumman for providing me with another amazing internship experience this summer! I wasn't planning on returning this year, but I don't have a single regret doing so. As expected, the Colorado weather was way nicer than Texas, and I met (and reunited with) some amazing people who made this summer great. Shout-out to Juliet Corning, Monica Ramos-Peterson, MBA, Marcus B., and May Schulte for all the support with my work and insights on my future career! And of course, thank you to Brian Herrera, Nessa McWeeney, Jamliv Dejo Lopez, and Joselyn Zamora for your friendship; you guys were the main reason this summer was so great :) I don't really know who's going to read this post, but I do have some advice. - I know it's said a lot, but take the opportunity to connect with people and learn from them! Some of the conversations I've had with people, whether it be leadership, managers, engineers, or other interns, have changed my outlook on my future. You may think you have everything figured out, but honestly, I've probably thought the same thing 10+ times throughout my undergraduate degree and been proven wrong every time. - Travel! This may resonate more or less depending on who you are, but as someone who's lived in the same area my whole life, taking the opportunity to travel out-of-state really broadened my horizons! Getting to live by yourself in a completely new environment taught me a lot, and I'd recommend it to anyone. If you can, don't close your options to working locally; be open and excited to explore! It's been a great summer, and if there was one thing I would recommend to anyone reading this, it would be to make the most out of your experiences—be it an internship, co-op, full-time position, or research. Make the most out of your work, but most importantly, the people you get to meet!

It was fun to look back and reflect on my first summer internship experience over two decades ago for The Switchboard’s recent edition on learnings from summer jobs and internships. Thanks Julia Levy for the feature. My first summer internship was on a manufacturing floor at GE. I was a 19-year-old kid there to help make the jobs of individuals who had worked on the line for 30+ years easier. I quickly realized that getting work done depended on first building trust and credibility through non-work-related conversations, and over time, achieving small wins to eventually be trusted to drive sustainable change. Building trust still remains an integral part of driving change in everything I do, as it lays the foundation for effective collaboration, meaningful relationships, and sustainable success. Have you reflected on your first job or college internship recently? What did you learn that is still with you today? Share more 👇🏽 Check out the full article along with great insights from other leaders in the comment below.

So many great internships!!! Important for STU Spo-Ad students to know…You need to do an internship for credit (like a class) AND you should do multiple internships to advance your skills and network (doesn’t have to be for credit). Experiential learning is the key to career success as it helps you build your resume and your professional network. #getinvolved #internships #experientiallearning #networking
