Talking to R&D people in the industry, the shoe is on the other foot when it comes to reformulation. 📢 The increasing regulatory frenzy, .... ....a term I've borrowed from Lionel Schlessinger from Monopol Colours, is forcing paint manufacturers to adapt their tried and tested formulations - unfortunately it has little to do with innovation, it's more of a necessity. We have more and more substances in our formulations that are no longer compliant, be it PFAS, bisphenol A, biocides or other chemicals of concern. We have been serving the coatings industry for more than 100 years and we want to support the industry create something better and new to ultimately make the world a better place every day. I believe that a key element of this is to bring together the industry's leading minds and facilitate the exchange of new developments and ideas. I just received this random picture from our raft in Singapore and thought I would clarify a common misconception: 🕰 Early 2000s: Silicone paints (sometimes termed as Fouling Release or FRCs) "rely on a physical mechanism to deter and release biofouling. They do this by producing a coating whose surface has been designed to produce low surface energy which in turn, reduces the adhesion properties of any biofouling which has been able to settle. Due to the mode of action of these coatings, they are most suitable for use on vessels which reach higher speeds and have higher levels of activity" (quote from GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships's 2022 report, so this definition is still very much in use today) ⭐ Hempaguard and Hempablue: best in class silicone-based coatings TODAY use state of the art hydrogel technology to prevent organisms from attaching AT ALL to the surface for extremely long periods of time, even under static conditions. Hempablue can do that with zero biocides despite not as long as Hempaguard. The fuel savings linked to our Hempaguard X7 performance claims have just been validated by DNV.

Excited to be in Chicago for the ABA SEER conference! Tomorrow I will co-present an Expert Insights Panel on “Managing Risk Related to PFAS in the Evolving Regulatory Sphere” with my colleagues Ashish Deshmukh and Scott Hayter, and we also have Brian Hanks attending with us. Abstract: In light of recent and pending federal/state PFAS regulatory actions, it is more important than ever to stay on top of the developments and identify options for managing PFAS risks, whether in property/business transactions, or in facility operations and supply chain management. Ramboll's Expert Insights Panel will discuss recent regulatory developments, including TSCA reporting, TRI reporting, USEPA’s focus on PFAS in NPDES permitting, its move to establish MCLs for several PFAS in drinking water, its pending designation of several PFAS as hazardous substances, and its recent attention to specific industries including textiles and chrome plating. The panel will also be prepared to discuss implications for additional industry sectors such as pulp, paper, and paperboard; organics chemicals, plastics, and synthetic fibers; other chemical manufacturing; electric and electronic components; landfills; leather tanning and finishing; plastics molding and forming; paint formulating; centralized waste treatment; and other industry sectors identified in the PFAS Strategic Roadmap. Through several case examples, the panel will provide strategies and insight into evaluating and managing PFAS risks in this changing regulatory environment, and will share lessons learned. #RealWorldPFASsolutions
